General Course Information<br />

The arts <strong>in</strong>dustries are an important <strong>and</strong> exp<strong>and</strong><strong>in</strong>g economy currently employ<strong>in</strong>g more than 500,000<br />

people. Many of these have tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> development needs: <strong>in</strong>ternal promotion, career development,<br />

growth <strong>and</strong> expansion can all put new stresses <strong>and</strong> stra<strong>in</strong>s on exist<strong>in</strong>g staff. With advances <strong>in</strong> IT <strong>and</strong><br />

the impact this is hav<strong>in</strong>g on every arts organisation, it is important that relevant professional<br />

development courses are on offer.<br />

The Diploma <strong>in</strong> Arts Management offers essential tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> all the necessary areas to be able to<br />

manage <strong>and</strong> professionally run your own company, your own practice or be an efficient key member<br />

of staff with<strong>in</strong> an arts organisation. Our students ga<strong>in</strong> these skills <strong>and</strong> are able to secure better<br />

employment with<strong>in</strong> the arts as a result.<br />

Speakers & Visits:<br />

The programme attracts a range of professional speakers from key arts organisations <strong>in</strong> the UK. These<br />

speakers offer an opportunity to hear about their work<strong>in</strong>g lives <strong>and</strong> the role of their organisations.<br />

Speakers over the last two years have <strong>in</strong>cluded representatives from Nesta, Arts & Bus<strong>in</strong>ess, the Royal<br />

Opera House, the Craft Council, the Millennium Commission, the Dome, Visions, Art & Enterta<strong>in</strong>ment,<br />

<strong>and</strong> a range of galleries, theatres <strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong>dependent arts organisations. Students are also <strong>in</strong>vited on a<br />

number of external visits organised as a supplement to the programme. These provide a unique<br />

opportunity to engage with the real issues. Visits <strong>in</strong> the past have <strong>in</strong>cluded Hampstead Town Hall<br />

(before it opened as a new multimedia arts centre), Pitshanger Manor & Gallery <strong>in</strong> Eal<strong>in</strong>g, the<br />

Whitechapel, Tate Modern, Battersea Arts Centre <strong>and</strong> the Department of Culture, Media & Sport.<br />
