The Department of Arts Policy <strong>and</strong> Management at City University was established <strong>in</strong> 1974. It is<br />

unique <strong>in</strong> the British university system. It is a large <strong>and</strong> grow<strong>in</strong>g postgraduate department, now <strong>in</strong> its<br />

27th year, which specialises <strong>in</strong> teach<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> research cover<strong>in</strong>g arts <strong>policy</strong>-mak<strong>in</strong>g, arts criticism, <strong>and</strong> a<br />

broad range of arts, heritage <strong>and</strong> <strong>cultural</strong> <strong>management</strong> subjects. The Department offers a unique<br />

opportunity to engage <strong>in</strong> research <strong>in</strong> these areas, <strong>and</strong> also offers taught courses of particular <strong>in</strong>terest<br />

to arts managers, government officials, arts planners, arts <strong>management</strong> consultants, educationalists<br />

<strong>in</strong> the arts, <strong>in</strong>formation <strong>and</strong> resources officers, museum <strong>and</strong> gallery curators, critics, artists <strong>and</strong><br />

entrepreneurs <strong>in</strong> the arts <strong>and</strong> <strong>cultural</strong> sector. Its aim is:<br />

- to provide rigorous postgraduate courses <strong>in</strong> the <strong>management</strong> of the arts, heritage <strong>and</strong> culture;<br />

- to provide teach<strong>in</strong>g which is <strong>in</strong>formed by current professional practice <strong>and</strong> research;<br />

- to provide a well-resourced learn<strong>in</strong>g environment;<br />

- to provide the underp<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g knowledge necessary for deal<strong>in</strong>g with managerial <strong>and</strong>/or critical<br />

situations <strong>in</strong> a chang<strong>in</strong>g <strong>cultural</strong> sector;<br />

- to ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong> professional networks;<br />

- to ensure recognition <strong>and</strong> validation from relevant professional bodies <strong>in</strong> the UK <strong>and</strong> abroad;<br />

Content<br />

MA <strong>in</strong> Arts Criticism:<br />

The ma<strong>in</strong> objective is to consider the problems <strong>and</strong> challenges of contemporary arts criticism with<strong>in</strong><br />

the context of the <strong>in</strong>stitutional sett<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> which art <strong>and</strong> criticism emerge. The deadl<strong>in</strong>e for applications<br />

is usually <strong>in</strong> April.<br />
