Background, orientation <strong>and</strong> purpose<br />

UCD has been offer<strong>in</strong>g MA <strong>and</strong> MLitt programmes <strong>in</strong> Cultural Policy <strong>and</strong> Arts Management s<strong>in</strong>ce<br />

September 2001. Build<strong>in</strong>g on 15 years of the Higher Diploma <strong>in</strong> Arts Adm<strong>in</strong>istration, the development<br />

of the first MA <strong>and</strong> MLitt <strong>in</strong> Cultural Policy <strong>and</strong> Arts Management <strong>in</strong> Irel<strong>and</strong> is designed to ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong> the<br />

national leadership role which UCD occupies <strong>in</strong> this area. The rationale for the changes <strong>in</strong>cludes the<br />

strong dem<strong>and</strong> for higher st<strong>and</strong>ards of education <strong>in</strong> the sector, <strong>in</strong> particular for education which takes<br />

place <strong>in</strong> the work<strong>in</strong>g environment as well as <strong>in</strong> the university. In response to <strong>in</strong>creas<strong>in</strong>g<br />

professionalism <strong>in</strong> the <strong>cultural</strong> field, the course is designed to respond to the substantial growth of<br />

publicly funded arts provision <strong>and</strong> the grow<strong>in</strong>g awareness of the social <strong>and</strong> economic importance of<br />

the arts. The academic <strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong>tellectual st<strong>and</strong>ards of the programmes are commensurate with the<br />

highest level of <strong>in</strong>ternational developments <strong>in</strong> this sphere.<br />

Content<br />

The one-year, full-time MA course will enable participants to underst<strong>and</strong> the theory <strong>and</strong> practice of<br />

<strong>cultural</strong> <strong>policy</strong> <strong>and</strong> arts <strong>management</strong>, to develop leadership <strong>and</strong> strategic <strong>policy</strong> perspectives <strong>and</strong> to<br />

acquire research expertise. The course is designed for those develop<strong>in</strong>g professional careers <strong>in</strong> arts<br />

<strong>and</strong> <strong>cultural</strong> <strong>management</strong>, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g the heritage <strong>and</strong> the <strong>cultural</strong> <strong>in</strong>dustries.<br />

The programme consists of:<br />

- Policy Studies (<strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g the social <strong>and</strong> economic context), public <strong>policy</strong> <strong>and</strong> adm<strong>in</strong>istration;<br />

- Comparative Studies <strong>in</strong> <strong>cultural</strong> <strong>policy</strong> <strong>and</strong> <strong>management</strong> <strong>and</strong> employment <strong>policy</strong> for the sector; <strong>and</strong><br />

- Bus<strong>in</strong>ess Studies, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g accountancy, <strong>management</strong>, bus<strong>in</strong>ess adm<strong>in</strong>istration <strong>and</strong> market<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

Follow<strong>in</strong>g spr<strong>in</strong>g exam<strong>in</strong>ations, students go to external organisations on a 10/12-week work<br />

placement. The students are free to arrange such placements for themselves or go through the Arts<br />

Adm<strong>in</strong>istration Department, which has l<strong>in</strong>ks with many of high-profile arts organisation throughout<br />

Irel<strong>and</strong>. The students are required to submit a 10,000-word dissertation. All subjects are taught <strong>in</strong> the<br />

English language.<br />

International/European dimension<br />

The Arts Adm<strong>in</strong>istration Department co-operates with City University <strong>in</strong> London, Moray House Institute<br />

of Education <strong>in</strong> Ed<strong>in</strong>burgh <strong>and</strong> Université de Paris Dauph<strong>in</strong>e with<strong>in</strong> the ERASMUS Programme. The<br />

<strong>in</strong>stitution is a member of ENCATC.<br />
