Background, orientation <strong>and</strong> purpose<br />

The University of St Andrews, established <strong>in</strong> the beg<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g of the 15th century, is Scotl<strong>and</strong>’s lead<strong>in</strong>g<br />

centre for postgraduate research <strong>and</strong> tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> the heritage sector. The Museum <strong>and</strong> Gallery Studies<br />

Diploma course prepares students for employment, pr<strong>in</strong>cipally as curators. Taught courses on the<br />

Theory <strong>and</strong> Practice of Museums, Galleries <strong>and</strong> Related Organisations are complemented by project<br />

work undertaken by students <strong>in</strong> local museums <strong>and</strong> galleries or work<strong>in</strong>g with the University<br />

Collections. Teach<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>volves lectures, sem<strong>in</strong>ars <strong>and</strong> visits to museums, galleries <strong>and</strong> houses <strong>in</strong><br />

Scotl<strong>and</strong> <strong>and</strong> valuable contributions to the course are made by members of the museums profession.<br />

Students also learn through research<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> produc<strong>in</strong>g a variety of written assignments. Those<br />

successful <strong>in</strong> the Diploma can write a dissertation to ga<strong>in</strong> the M.Litt. <strong>and</strong> opportunities for further<br />

study are also available.<br />

Museum <strong>and</strong> Gallery Studies <strong>in</strong> St Andrews is based <strong>in</strong> the School of Art History, though applications<br />

are welcomed from students with any relevant good degree. The School has a strong commitment to<br />

excellence <strong>in</strong> research <strong>and</strong> teach<strong>in</strong>g. Members of the staff have <strong>in</strong>terests which extend from the<br />

Mediaeval to Modern periods. Particular areas of concentration are the art of late Mediaeval <strong>and</strong><br />

Renaissance Italy; n<strong>in</strong>eteenth- <strong>and</strong> twentieth-century art <strong>in</strong> Brita<strong>in</strong>, France, Russia <strong>and</strong> Eastern<br />

Europe; British architecture of the eighteenth, n<strong>in</strong>eteenth <strong>and</strong> twentieth centuries; the decorative arts,<br />

photography <strong>and</strong> furniture history; <strong>and</strong> museum <strong>and</strong> gallery studies.<br />

With 14 full-time staff members the School is the largest Art History department <strong>in</strong> Scotl<strong>and</strong>. Museum<br />

<strong>and</strong> Gallery Studies is taught by three staff members, with occasional specialist contributions from<br />

others.<br />

The aim is to provide a broad theoretical <strong>and</strong> practical tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g course for those wish<strong>in</strong>g to jo<strong>in</strong> the<br />

museums profession. The deadl<strong>in</strong>e for applications is <strong>in</strong> March each year.<br />
