Background, orientation <strong>and</strong> purpose<br />

Witten/Herdecke University was the first private university to be established <strong>in</strong> Germany. The<br />

University was founded <strong>in</strong> 1983 to meet a dem<strong>and</strong> for educat<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>dividuals to help them realise their<br />

fullest potential, both for themselves <strong>and</strong> for society. Its founders were conv<strong>in</strong>ced that a university<br />

should be <strong>in</strong>novative <strong>in</strong> its organisational structure <strong>and</strong> should also contribute considerably to a new<br />

direction with<strong>in</strong> the culture of higher education. The University is an <strong>in</strong>dependent educational<br />

<strong>in</strong>stitution <strong>in</strong> which outer <strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong>ner autonomy are considered necessary prerequisites for the<br />

development <strong>and</strong> long-term realisation of new impulses <strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong>novation <strong>in</strong> higher education.<br />

Content<br />

The programme connects theories of culture - the knowledge of how one underst<strong>and</strong>s <strong>and</strong> practices<br />

culture - with a practical underst<strong>and</strong><strong>in</strong>g of how artists work, <strong>and</strong> adds <strong>in</strong> <strong>management</strong> skills.<br />

Special <strong>in</strong>formation<br />

Students can take part <strong>in</strong> conferences, concerts, theatre groups, exhibitions, congresses, workshops<br />

<strong>and</strong> excursions.<br />

Evaluation <strong>and</strong> assessment<br />

Student performance is evaluated through exam<strong>in</strong>ations, papers, a f<strong>in</strong>al paper/thesis <strong>and</strong> practical<br />

work/<strong>in</strong>ternship.<br />

Lecturers<br />

The number of teach<strong>in</strong>g personnel (Fakultät für das Studium fundamentale) is 40. N<strong>in</strong>e are permanent<br />

<strong>and</strong> the rest are visit<strong>in</strong>g. The person responsible for the study programmes is Prof. Elmar Lampson.<br />

Applicants should have university entrance qualification <strong>and</strong> appropriate experience.<br />
