As a result of the radical changes sweep<strong>in</strong>g through Europe at the time, the European Music Theatre<br />

Academy (EMA) was established on 26 May 1992 <strong>in</strong> the Ständetheater Prag <strong>in</strong> partnership with<br />

follow<strong>in</strong>g countries <strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong>stitutions:<br />

Forschungs<strong>in</strong>stitut für Musiktheater der Universität Bayreuth, Germany;<br />

Theatre “Vanemu<strong>in</strong>e”, Tartu, Estonia;<br />

Academy of Science, Prague, Czech Republic;<br />

Institut für Theaterwissenschaft an der Universität Wien, Austria.<br />

S<strong>in</strong>ce then, national branch offices have been established. An extensive pan-European network is<br />

envisaged.<br />

Dur<strong>in</strong>g its formative stage, EMA was oriented ma<strong>in</strong>ly towards extend<strong>in</strong>g help to partners <strong>in</strong> Eastern<br />

Europe so they could become self-reliant. Now EMA sees itself more <strong>and</strong> more as a platform for<br />

dialogue. EMA has set itself the task of enhanc<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> br<strong>in</strong>g<strong>in</strong>g together research <strong>in</strong> music theory <strong>and</strong><br />

practice throughout Europe.<br />

The Academy builds contacts between scientists <strong>and</strong> practitioners, facilitat<strong>in</strong>g the exchange of<br />

op<strong>in</strong>ions <strong>and</strong> experiences. It is EMA’s <strong>in</strong>tention to optimise both the research work be<strong>in</strong>g carried out<br />

<strong>and</strong> the practical cooperation that is ongo<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> European music theatres.<br />

Music Theatre <strong>and</strong> Economics is a 3-day conference that <strong>in</strong>vestigates the relation between music<br />

theatre <strong>and</strong> economics.<br />

International/European dimension<br />

With its European <strong>in</strong>stitutional partners, EMA plans to build an extensive pan-European network.<br />

Evaluation <strong>and</strong> assessment<br />

Because Music Theatre <strong>and</strong> Economics is a conference, there is no evaluation of student performance.<br />

Lecturers<br />

There is no permanent staff.<br />

Entry requirements<br />

Participants should be work<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> the field of music theatre/music theatre research.<br />
