Background, orientation <strong>and</strong> purpose<br />

Profiles: Denmark<br />

Rhythmic Music Conservatory (RMC) is a higher educational <strong>in</strong>stitution funded by the Danish M<strong>in</strong>istry<br />

of Culture. RMC offers tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g programmes <strong>in</strong> music <strong>and</strong> music education <strong>in</strong> the field of contemporary<br />

music (i.e. jazz, rock, pop, world, etc.).<br />

S<strong>in</strong>ce open<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> 1986, the RMC has become an important part of the contemporary music scene <strong>in</strong><br />

Denmark. In 1996 the RMC moved to a new, specially-built facility <strong>in</strong> Holmen (a group of small isl<strong>and</strong>s<br />

just outside the centre of Copenhagen). Holmen is also the home of the National Schools of film,<br />

theatre, dance <strong>and</strong> also the Royal Danish Academy of F<strong>in</strong>e Arts, offer<strong>in</strong>g plenty of opportunities for<br />

students to collaborate across art forms.<br />

Our school build<strong>in</strong>gs are beautifully situated near the waterfront <strong>and</strong> have excellent facilities, such as<br />

a large number of classrooms with <strong>in</strong>struments, concert halls, record<strong>in</strong>g studios, a library <strong>and</strong> ICTfacilities.<br />

All <strong>in</strong> all, the school provides a perfect location for students to prepare themselves to meet<br />

the <strong>in</strong>creas<strong>in</strong>g dem<strong>and</strong>s put on professional music performers <strong>and</strong> teachers.<br />

The RMC is the only school <strong>in</strong> the country specialis<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> contemporary music tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g programmes.<br />

Our tutors are among the lead<strong>in</strong>g musicians of the country, <strong>and</strong> we have a strong <strong>in</strong>ternational<br />

perspective to our programmes, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g sem<strong>in</strong>ars, workshops, cl<strong>in</strong>ics, etc. with guest teachers from<br />

abroad.<br />

Content<br />

The Music Management programme was <strong>in</strong>troduced <strong>in</strong> 2002. The programme offers a specialist<br />

tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> <strong>management</strong> <strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong>novation with<strong>in</strong> the music <strong>in</strong>dustry.<br />

The aim of the programme is to tra<strong>in</strong> the student for a career <strong>in</strong> the music <strong>in</strong>dustry; for <strong>in</strong>stance, at<br />

record companies, concert agencies, <strong>management</strong> companies, festivals, live venues, the media <strong>and</strong><br />

<strong>in</strong>ternet bus<strong>in</strong>ess, etc.<br />

The programme focuses on three subject clusters: Music Bus<strong>in</strong>ess Studies, Popular Music Studies <strong>and</strong><br />

Bus<strong>in</strong>ess Adm<strong>in</strong>istration Studies.<br />

The programme is structured <strong>in</strong> two parts:<br />

- A 2-year basic course where students will be taught <strong>in</strong> small groups with<strong>in</strong> the three subject clusters<br />

of the programme. The tuition will ma<strong>in</strong>ly be carried out with<strong>in</strong> the RMC or with partners <strong>in</strong> the music<br />

<strong>in</strong>dustry, comb<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g lectures <strong>and</strong> sem<strong>in</strong>ars with practical projects.<br />

- A 1-year specialised course where students are given the opportunity to focus on one of the three<br />

subject clusters of the programme. The third year focuses upon <strong>in</strong>dividual studies <strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong>cludes a<br />

period of study abroad <strong>and</strong> a larger f<strong>in</strong>al project comb<strong>in</strong>ed with specialised studies.<br />
