Background, orientation <strong>and</strong> purpose<br />

The Warsaw School of Economics (Szkola Glówna H<strong>and</strong>lowa or SGH), established <strong>in</strong> 1906, is the<br />

lead<strong>in</strong>g, <strong>and</strong> the oldest, public educational <strong>in</strong>stitution for economics <strong>in</strong> Pol<strong>and</strong>. Its educational,<br />

scientific <strong>and</strong> research activities comb<strong>in</strong>e with the development of modern Polish economic <strong>and</strong> social<br />

th<strong>in</strong>k<strong>in</strong>g as well as the establishment of educational <strong>and</strong> ethical values.<br />

In accomplish<strong>in</strong>g its mission, the School applies its f<strong>in</strong>est traditions to today's tasks <strong>and</strong> tomorrow's<br />

challenges, provid<strong>in</strong>g the <strong>in</strong>spiration for economic transformation.<br />

PRINCIPAL VALUES<br />

The guid<strong>in</strong>g pr<strong>in</strong>ciples of the School are: truth, a respect for knowledge, <strong>and</strong> probity <strong>in</strong> its<br />

dissem<strong>in</strong>ation. SGH is guided <strong>in</strong> its research work by the quest for truth <strong>and</strong> the result<strong>in</strong>g scientific<br />

progress <strong>and</strong> social benefits. The tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g encompasses the discovery of the latest world-class<br />

<strong>in</strong>formation, the formation of proper work habits, <strong>and</strong> the development of entrepreneurship together<br />

ESSENTIAL MISSION ELEMENTS<br />

EDUCATION<br />

The Warsaw School of Economics is a higher academic <strong>in</strong>stitution whose aims are teach<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong><br />

education. The School provides education <strong>in</strong> the fields of Economic <strong>and</strong> Social Sciences. It prepares<br />

cadres of highly qualified economic analysts <strong>and</strong> leaders capable of <strong>in</strong>dependently determ<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g,<br />

exam<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> solv<strong>in</strong>g economic problems. Their knowledge ensures that they not only propose<br />

solutions, but also anticipate future threats <strong>and</strong> create the changes needed to meet them successfully.<br />

The School <strong>in</strong>culcates its students with the ideals of community service <strong>and</strong> professional responsibility.<br />

It creates <strong>and</strong> promotes professional ethical pr<strong>in</strong>ciples for economists. SGH alumni belong to the<br />

nation's bus<strong>in</strong>ess <strong>and</strong> political elite.<br />

SGH offers courses of study at the licentiate, master's <strong>and</strong> doctorate levels. Full-time <strong>and</strong> part-time<br />
