Background, orientation <strong>and</strong> purpose<br />

The Faculty of Cultural Sciences, <strong>in</strong> the European University Viadr<strong>in</strong>a, offers a study course <strong>in</strong><br />

“European <strong>cultural</strong> heritage”. The faculty was established <strong>in</strong> 1999.<br />

Content<br />

The course aims to enable its graduates to deal scientifically with the theoretical aspects of <strong>cultural</strong><br />

monuments as a research topic. The <strong>cultural</strong> dimension of the concept (theory <strong>and</strong> history of <strong>cultural</strong><br />

monument preservation), its legal context (monument <strong>and</strong> <strong>cultural</strong> monument law, plann<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong><br />

build<strong>in</strong>g law, etc.) as well as the economic aspects of deal<strong>in</strong>g with <strong>cultural</strong> monuments form the ma<strong>in</strong><br />

focus of the course. With an emphasis on compar<strong>in</strong>g these issues across <strong>in</strong> Europe, the follow<strong>in</strong>g ma<strong>in</strong><br />

po<strong>in</strong>ts will be focused on:<br />

- the competent use of the common European <strong>cultural</strong> heritage, with respect to architectural <strong>and</strong><br />

l<strong>and</strong>scape monuments as well as the culture regard<strong>in</strong>g historical objects;<br />

- the clarification of different European ideas about the term "monument" - conservation <strong>and</strong><br />

restoration measures as well as monument law <strong>and</strong> the economic use of <strong>cultural</strong> monuments;<br />

- the <strong>in</strong>troduction of <strong>in</strong>dividual students to potential occupational areas with<strong>in</strong> national <strong>and</strong><br />

<strong>in</strong>ternational <strong>in</strong>stitutes for the preservation of <strong>cultural</strong> properties, regional build<strong>in</strong>g adm<strong>in</strong>istrations,<br />

l<strong>and</strong>scape federations, departments of heritage, <strong>in</strong>stitutions for monument preservation (<strong>in</strong> public,<br />

religious or any other branches of organisations concerned with the upkeep of monuments) as well as<br />

the areas of media <strong>and</strong> publish<strong>in</strong>g; <strong>and</strong><br />

- the awareness of structures <strong>and</strong> organisations dedicated to the protection <strong>and</strong> <strong>management</strong> of<br />

<strong>cultural</strong> monuments, especially those with political, economical <strong>and</strong> legal implications.<br />

The deadl<strong>in</strong>e for applications is usually once a year until mid- or late November, but under certa<strong>in</strong><br />

conditions it is also possible to apply <strong>in</strong> April. This should be discussed with the head of the study<br />

course.<br />

Evaluation <strong>and</strong> assessment<br />

Students performance is evaluated through exam<strong>in</strong>ations, papers, f<strong>in</strong>al thesis <strong>and</strong> practical<br />

work/<strong>in</strong>ternship.<br />
