Background, orientation <strong>and</strong> purpose<br />

KAZAKHSTAN<br />

The Central Asian International Centre of Art Management was established <strong>in</strong> 2000. Its vision is to<br />

create a healthy, pro-active <strong>and</strong> co-operative <strong>cultural</strong> community throughout Central Asia with the<br />

goal of rais<strong>in</strong>g global awareness of Central Asia’s rich history, traditions <strong>and</strong> <strong>cultural</strong> treasures.<br />

Project Central Asian Management School (W<strong>in</strong>ter 2002), <strong>in</strong> conjunction with the second 'International<br />

Roundtable Discussions on Cultural Life <strong>and</strong> Cultural Policy Issues', attempts to provide arts managers<br />

with the skills <strong>and</strong> tools they need to work effectively <strong>and</strong> efficiently <strong>in</strong> their own environments <strong>and</strong><br />

further afield, <strong>and</strong> to take an active role - through education <strong>and</strong> practice on an ongo<strong>in</strong>g basis - <strong>in</strong> the<br />

research, analysis <strong>and</strong> formulation of a new <strong>cultural</strong> <strong>policy</strong> for Central Asia.<br />

CAICAM’s short term objectives:<br />

To create for Central Asia a systematic <strong>and</strong> ongo<strong>in</strong>g base for professional education <strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong>ternational<br />

st<strong>and</strong>ards of <strong>cultural</strong> <strong>management</strong> - <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g organisational <strong>management</strong>, production, <strong>and</strong><br />

representation - through an annual programme of <strong>in</strong>tensive study <strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong>teraction with <strong>in</strong>ternational<br />

tra<strong>in</strong>ers <strong>and</strong> activists;<br />

To give participants the pre-requisite(s) necessary for cont<strong>in</strong>ued study <strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong>ternational programmes<br />

<strong>and</strong> to broaden their view of the world marketplace;<br />

To provide arts managers with a strong theoretical <strong>and</strong> practical base of strategic <strong>management</strong> skills<br />

relevant to the arts market of today, that take <strong>in</strong>to account the prevail<strong>in</strong>g political <strong>and</strong> economic<br />

structures;<br />

to persuade arts managers, <strong>cultural</strong> <strong>and</strong> scientific practitioners, governmental <strong>and</strong> non-governmental<br />

representatives, <strong>and</strong> privately-funded organisations <strong>and</strong> foundations concerned with <strong>cultural</strong><br />

development to become actively <strong>in</strong>volved <strong>in</strong> the development of new <strong>cultural</strong> <strong>policy</strong>; <strong>and</strong><br />

To beg<strong>in</strong> the process of build<strong>in</strong>g new networks throughout Central Asia which can, <strong>in</strong> both the short<br />

<strong>and</strong> long term, become a voice <strong>and</strong> lobby<strong>in</strong>g force for <strong>cultural</strong> development.<br />
