Background, orientation <strong>and</strong> purpose<br />

The Courtauld Institute of Art, established <strong>in</strong> 1932, aims to advance the underst<strong>and</strong><strong>in</strong>g of human<br />

history through the study <strong>and</strong> enjoyment of the visual arts, <strong>and</strong> thereby to enhance its position as one<br />

of the world’s lead<strong>in</strong>g centres of <strong>in</strong>tellectual enquiry <strong>in</strong> the subject.<br />

These aims will be achieved by:<br />

- Provid<strong>in</strong>g an <strong>in</strong>ternational centre <strong>and</strong> forum to undertake <strong>and</strong> exchange advanced research <strong>in</strong> the<br />

history <strong>and</strong> conservation of art;<br />

- Support<strong>in</strong>g our students at every level through specialised small-group teach<strong>in</strong>g, exceptional<br />

resources, <strong>and</strong> direct study of works of art us<strong>in</strong>g the great collections <strong>and</strong> build<strong>in</strong>gs of London, the<br />

United K<strong>in</strong>gdom <strong>and</strong> abroad;<br />

- Provid<strong>in</strong>g through special exhibitions <strong>and</strong> the display of our world-class collections opportunities for<br />

education, research enjoyment <strong>and</strong> tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g;<br />

- Provid<strong>in</strong>g access to <strong>and</strong> stimulat<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>terest <strong>in</strong> the visual arts for primary <strong>and</strong> secondary school<br />

children <strong>and</strong> those engaged <strong>in</strong> life-long learn<strong>in</strong>g; <strong>and</strong><br />

- Provid<strong>in</strong>g susta<strong>in</strong>able growth for our libraries, archives <strong>and</strong> collections as resources for teach<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong><br />

Lecturers<br />

The number of teach<strong>in</strong>g personnel is 30. Twenty-one are permanent <strong>and</strong> the rest are visit<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

Course fee<br />

For full-time undergraduate students, 2002-3<br />

Home <strong>and</strong> EU students £1,100 per annum<br />

Overseas students £8,400 per annum. Fee levels for 2003-4 will be confirmed <strong>in</strong> January 2003.<br />

For postgraduate students, 2002-3, subject to review.<br />
