Background, orientation <strong>and</strong> purpose<br />

The Department of Cultural Studies at Danube University was established <strong>in</strong> June 2001. The<br />

Department regards itself as an <strong>in</strong>ternational, national <strong>and</strong> regional centre <strong>in</strong> the fields of culture <strong>and</strong><br />

art. The current dynamic progress of this economic sector <strong>in</strong> Europe provides momentum for the<br />

Department to pursue postgraduate research <strong>and</strong> tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g, with the goal of fulfill<strong>in</strong>g vital social needs.<br />

Its aim is to faciliate the l<strong>in</strong>k<strong>in</strong>g of teach<strong>in</strong>g, research <strong>and</strong> practice by build<strong>in</strong>g up national <strong>and</strong><br />

<strong>in</strong>ternational co-operation. It places great significance on user orientation <strong>in</strong> its <strong>cultural</strong> <strong>and</strong> artistic<br />

research, with special emphasis on <strong>in</strong>terdiscipl<strong>in</strong>arity. The development of scientific <strong>and</strong> theoretical<br />

bases is seen as an activity support<strong>in</strong>g practice-oriented teach<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

In the medium term, a range of courses will focus on the fields of <strong>in</strong>ter<strong>cultural</strong> communication,<br />

<strong>in</strong>tervention art, the pictorial sciences, archiv<strong>in</strong>g, music, design, stage <strong>and</strong> event <strong>management</strong>,<br />

together with museum <strong>and</strong> exhibition <strong>management</strong>. Teach<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> research will also take <strong>in</strong>to account<br />

the possibilities of comb<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g specific fields; for <strong>in</strong>stance, pictorial analysis <strong>and</strong> digital archiv<strong>in</strong>g<br />

technologies.<br />

There are 4 permanent teach<strong>in</strong>g personnel, 2 of whom are women, <strong>in</strong> the Department of Cultural<br />
