The ma<strong>in</strong> objectives of the Latvian Academy of Culture is to prepare academically educated <strong>and</strong><br />

professional experts for <strong>cultural</strong>, scientific <strong>and</strong> educational work, to do research work <strong>in</strong> the<br />

humanities, <strong>and</strong> to provide <strong>in</strong>ter<strong>cultural</strong> exchange.<br />

The ma<strong>in</strong> areas of research are the general theory <strong>and</strong> history of culture, drama, the sociology of<br />

culture, <strong>and</strong> the philosophy of art.<br />

The objective of the Cultural Management Programme is to prepare a new generation of professional<br />

<strong>cultural</strong> managers who apply logical <strong>and</strong> creative thought <strong>and</strong> approaches, who underst<strong>and</strong> <strong>and</strong> are<br />

able to succeed <strong>in</strong> the modern, <strong>in</strong>ternationally-fac<strong>in</strong>g European <strong>cultural</strong> space <strong>in</strong> different fields of the<br />

arts. The programme is unique as it offers the first opportunity <strong>in</strong> Latvia to acquire theoretical<br />

knowledge <strong>and</strong> practical skills under the leadership of professional lecturers.<br />

The Latvian Academy of Culture was established <strong>in</strong> 1990, the MA Programme <strong>in</strong> Cultural Management<br />

<strong>in</strong> 1997, <strong>and</strong> the Professional MA Study Course, “Media <strong>and</strong> Culture Management”, <strong>in</strong> 2000.<br />

Content<br />

MA <strong>in</strong> Cultural Management:<br />

The programme <strong>in</strong>troduces students to the ma<strong>in</strong> subjects <strong>in</strong> the adm<strong>in</strong>istration <strong>and</strong> <strong>management</strong> of<br />

<strong>cultural</strong> work <strong>and</strong> offers the opportunity to consolidate this <strong>in</strong>formation through practical exercises.<br />

Dur<strong>in</strong>g the course, students become <strong>in</strong>volved <strong>in</strong> different projects <strong>and</strong> practical assignments <strong>in</strong> various<br />

<strong>cultural</strong> <strong>in</strong>stitutions. The ma<strong>in</strong> subjects covered are:<br />

- Management;<br />

- Market<strong>in</strong>g;<br />

- Plann<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> Organisation;<br />

- Cultural <strong>policy</strong>;<br />

- Law;<br />

- Economics <strong>and</strong> F<strong>in</strong>ance;<br />

- Theory of Culture; <strong>and</strong><br />

- Practicals (two last<strong>in</strong>g one month each, one last<strong>in</strong>g three months).<br />

The teach<strong>in</strong>g language is Latvian.<br />
