Background, orientation <strong>and</strong> purpose<br />

The impetus to launch the programme grew out of a conference <strong>in</strong> Vienna <strong>in</strong> 1991. At this conference,<br />

the Institut für Kulturelles Management offered their Programme. among other western models, to<br />

former socialist countries attend<strong>in</strong>g the conference. The Programme started as a 12-unit course <strong>in</strong><br />

May 1992. S<strong>in</strong>ce 1993, ELTE has also offered a postgraduate <strong>cultural</strong> <strong>and</strong> arts <strong>management</strong><br />

programme.<br />

The course’s ma<strong>in</strong> aim is to provide up-to-date professional <strong>and</strong> practical skills for those wish<strong>in</strong>g to<br />

work or already work<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> a <strong>cultural</strong> sector (educational, public-collection <strong>and</strong> art <strong>in</strong>stitutions; <strong>cultural</strong><br />

bus<strong>in</strong>esses; local authorities).<br />

Cultural <strong>and</strong> Arts Management Programme.<br />

Certificate of Cultural Manager (postgraduate).<br />

Educational <strong>and</strong> <strong>Tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g</strong> programmes <strong>in</strong> the EU (with the help of the Tempus foundation).<br />

Duration<br />

Cultural <strong>and</strong> Arts Management Programme - 2 years.<br />

Certificate of Cultural Manager (postgraduate) - 1 year.<br />

Content<br />

The Cultural <strong>and</strong> Arts Management Programme <strong>and</strong> Certificate of Cultural Managers cover the same<br />

Programme, but the graduate course is for full-time university students who follow the programme as<br />

their ma<strong>in</strong> subject. The post-graduate course lasts one year <strong>and</strong> only people who already have a<br />

degree can enter the course.<br />

The programme <strong>in</strong>cludes the follow<strong>in</strong>g subjects: economic, legal <strong>and</strong> f<strong>in</strong>ancial aspects of the non-profit<br />

sector; comparative public <strong>policy</strong>; <strong>cultural</strong> market<strong>in</strong>g; practical arts <strong>management</strong>; theory of culture<br />

<strong>and</strong> communication; public relations <strong>in</strong> the arts; the theory <strong>and</strong> practice of sponsorship <strong>in</strong> today's<br />

Hungary; heritage <strong>management</strong> (<strong>in</strong> English); reform of the system of <strong>cultural</strong> <strong>in</strong>stitutions; education<br />

<strong>and</strong> tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g programmes <strong>in</strong> the EU.<br />

International/European dimension<br />

Some of the courses are given by foreign lecturers who specialise <strong>in</strong> different European <strong>and</strong> American<br />

<strong>cultural</strong> issues. The <strong>in</strong>stitution is a member of ENCATC.<br />

Evaluation <strong>and</strong> assessment<br />

Student performance is evaluated through a f<strong>in</strong>al paper/thesis.<br />

Lecturers<br />

Lecturers <strong>in</strong>clude economists, artists, <strong>in</strong>stitution leaders, university professors, lawyers, art theorists,<br />

journalists <strong>and</strong> entrepreneurs. The number of teach<strong>in</strong>g personnel is 25, six of whom are women. Two<br />
