Background, orientation <strong>and</strong> purpose<br />

The Royal College of Art was established <strong>in</strong> 1837. The objectives of the College are to advance<br />

learn<strong>in</strong>g, knowledge <strong>and</strong> professional competence, particularly <strong>in</strong> the field of f<strong>in</strong>e arts, <strong>in</strong> the pr<strong>in</strong>ciples<br />

<strong>and</strong> practice of art <strong>and</strong> design, <strong>in</strong> their relation to <strong>in</strong>dustrial <strong>and</strong> commercial processes, <strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong> social<br />

developments <strong>and</strong> other subjects related to teach<strong>in</strong>g, research <strong>and</strong> collaboration with <strong>in</strong>dustry <strong>and</strong><br />

commerce.<br />

Content<br />

The course aims to offer both a vocational tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> an academic study of contemporary curatorial<br />

practice, underp<strong>in</strong>ned by an underst<strong>and</strong><strong>in</strong>g of the wider <strong>cultural</strong> <strong>and</strong> critical context.<br />

Special <strong>in</strong>formation<br />

Conferences, study trips <strong>and</strong> special exhibitions are related to the programme.<br />

Evaluation <strong>and</strong> assessment<br />

Student performance is evaluated through exam<strong>in</strong>ations, papers, research, f<strong>in</strong>al paper/thesis <strong>and</strong><br />

practical work/<strong>in</strong>ternship.<br />

Lecturers<br />

The number of teach<strong>in</strong>g personnel is 110, 51 of whom are women. All are permanent. In addition,<br />

there are 450 visit<strong>in</strong>g lecturers. Some visit once a week, some once a year. The person responsible for<br />

the study programme is Teresa Gleadowe.<br />

Applicants should have a university degree or appropriate experience.<br />

Students are mostly university graduates, from the UK <strong>and</strong> abroad.<br />

The current number of students is 12 or 13 <strong>in</strong> each year’s group.<br />
