Content<br />

This programme is designed to allow students to underst<strong>and</strong> <strong>and</strong> demonstrate the practical application<br />

of theory to a wide range of managerial situations <strong>in</strong> the arts. They study a broad range of theoretical<br />

concepts that underp<strong>in</strong> practical studies, all driven by an underst<strong>and</strong><strong>in</strong>g of quality. They work <strong>in</strong> areas<br />

such as strategy, manag<strong>in</strong>g change, adm<strong>in</strong>istration, publicity <strong>and</strong> market<strong>in</strong>g, legal <strong>and</strong> ethical issues,<br />

f<strong>in</strong>ancial <strong>management</strong> <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g fundrais<strong>in</strong>g, as well as stage, production <strong>and</strong> event <strong>management</strong>.<br />

The programmes offered by the School focus on performance <strong>and</strong> the arts <strong>in</strong> their <strong>cultural</strong> <strong>and</strong><br />

commercial context. Previous alumni of Bretton Hall <strong>in</strong>clude the creators of the TV cult series The<br />

League of Gentlemen, Wayne McGregor, founder of the <strong>in</strong>ternationally renowned R<strong>and</strong>om Dance<br />

Company <strong>and</strong> comedian Mark Thomas.<br />

Students will undertake a broad range of study cover<strong>in</strong>g all aspects of <strong>management</strong> <strong>and</strong><br />

adm<strong>in</strong>istration, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g publicity, market<strong>in</strong>g, fundrais<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> legal <strong>and</strong> f<strong>in</strong>ancial issues. Students<br />

practice the skills of arts <strong>management</strong> <strong>in</strong> real situations, with numerous <strong>cultural</strong>, artistic <strong>and</strong> musical<br />

events each year both on the Bretton Hall Campus <strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong> local venues. There are a number of<br />

theatres on campus <strong>and</strong> a professional theatre venue <strong>in</strong> the centre of Wakefield.<br />

Special features <strong>in</strong>clude the ability to practice the skills of arts <strong>management</strong> <strong>in</strong> real situations. A<br />

variety of theatres, studios <strong>and</strong> exhibition spaces, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g the largest sculpture area <strong>in</strong> Europe<br />

provide many opportunities for <strong>in</strong>volvement <strong>in</strong> professional situations <strong>in</strong> the arts, <strong>and</strong> opportunity for<br />

collaborative work with students from other discipl<strong>in</strong>es.<br />

Entry requirements<br />

Normally 3 A-levels at BCC, or BTEC dip profile of merits <strong>and</strong> dist<strong>in</strong>ctions, or a range of relevant<br />

experience.<br />

The normal entry requirements of the University of Leeds are three "A" levels or equivalent academic<br />

qualifications. However, the University recognises that professional <strong>and</strong> practical elements are part of<br />

the degrees offered at the Bretton Hall Campus <strong>and</strong> applicants who can demonstrate high levels of<br />

ability <strong>in</strong> their chosen area, or can give evidence of previous professional experience, will be<br />

considered with two "A" levels or equivalent academic qualifications.<br />

Applications from mature students with previous relevant experience are particularly welcome.<br />
