Background, orientation <strong>and</strong> purpose<br />

Goldsmiths College University of London was established <strong>in</strong> 1891 <strong>and</strong> specialised tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> <strong>cultural</strong><br />

<strong>management</strong> started <strong>in</strong> 1990. Goldsmiths is a specialist college with<strong>in</strong> the University of London that<br />

has as its focus the study of creative, cognitive, <strong>cultural</strong> <strong>and</strong> social processes, coupled with a<br />

commitment to lifelong learn<strong>in</strong>g. It values equally its <strong>in</strong>ternational reputation for research, scholarship<br />

<strong>and</strong> teach<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> its tradition of work<strong>in</strong>g with <strong>and</strong> for the people of South East London. The College<br />

pursues excellence <strong>in</strong> a dist<strong>in</strong>ctive comb<strong>in</strong>ation of discipl<strong>in</strong>es: visual, literary <strong>and</strong> perform<strong>in</strong>g arts;<br />

social, behavioural <strong>and</strong> comput<strong>in</strong>g sciences; design, the humanities <strong>and</strong> educational studies.<br />

Many students on the programme come from overseas <strong>and</strong> make a valuable contribution to the<br />

learn<strong>in</strong>g environment by provid<strong>in</strong>g an <strong>in</strong>ternational perspective on <strong>cultural</strong> issues from their respective<br />

countries. In addition staff <strong>in</strong> the Drama department have considerable experience of work<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong><br />

research<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>ternationally <strong>in</strong> areas that are directly relevant to the programme.<br />

MA Arts Adm<strong>in</strong>istration <strong>and</strong> Cultural Policy.<br />

Duration<br />

MA Arts Adm<strong>in</strong>istration <strong>and</strong> Cultural Policy - 1 year full-time (12 months from September to<br />

September); 2 years if part-time.<br />

Content<br />

MA Arts Adm<strong>in</strong>istration <strong>and</strong> Cultural Policy:<br />

This programme aims to enable students to reach their potential as a creative arts adm<strong>in</strong>istrator <strong>in</strong><br />

both areas of <strong>policy</strong> <strong>and</strong> practice. Subjects studied <strong>in</strong>clude Arts Policy <strong>and</strong> Practice <strong>in</strong> Europe, Arts<br />

Education, Regeneration through Arts, Arts <strong>and</strong> Tourism <strong>and</strong> the Role of Arts <strong>in</strong> National <strong>and</strong> Cultural<br />

Identity. Specialist modules are also offered <strong>in</strong> Audience Development, Fundrais<strong>in</strong>g, Bus<strong>in</strong>ess Plann<strong>in</strong>g<br />

for the Arts <strong>and</strong> Management Practice. Students also have the opportunity to undertake a placement<br />

<strong>in</strong> an arts organisation. Students may take a music pathway through this programme; where options<br />

are available for shared theory courses they can take equivalent courses offered on the MMus<br />

programme. Teach<strong>in</strong>g is <strong>in</strong> English, <strong>and</strong> language courses <strong>in</strong> academic English are offered.<br />

International/European dimension<br />

Goldsmiths cooperates with European organisations, e.g. EIIA <strong>and</strong> CONCEPTS. It is a member of<br />

ENCATC. The office of the British Centre of the International Theatre Institute is based at Goldsmiths.<br />

Evaluation <strong>and</strong> assessment<br />

The programme is evaluated annually by external exam<strong>in</strong>er reports <strong>and</strong> the Quality Affairs department<br />

of the University of London. This <strong>in</strong>cludes student evaluation <strong>and</strong> monitor<strong>in</strong>g. The course <strong>and</strong> the<br />

department are subject to the national reviews for research <strong>and</strong> teach<strong>in</strong>g applicable to all UK<br />

universities. Degrees are issued by the University of London.<br />
