Background, orientation <strong>and</strong> purpose<br />

Profiles: F<strong>in</strong>l<strong>and</strong><br />

The Sydväst Polytechnic is made up of 13 formerly <strong>in</strong>dependent vocational colleges that were merged<br />

<strong>in</strong>to a polytechnic <strong>in</strong> 1996. The Degree Programme <strong>in</strong> Cultural Production has a scientific basis,<br />

comb<strong>in</strong>ed with a practical <strong>and</strong> professional orientation. Each is divided <strong>in</strong>to three levels of study. The<br />

basic studies give a general view of the whole professional discipl<strong>in</strong>e, <strong>and</strong> provide the student with<br />

basic theoretical <strong>and</strong> practical knowledge. Dur<strong>in</strong>g further professional studies, the student deepens<br />

his/her knowledge of a specific area. Through profile studies this knowledge is deepened <strong>and</strong> the<br />

student produces his/her bachelor thesis. The <strong>in</strong>stitution was established <strong>in</strong> 1996 <strong>and</strong> the programme<br />

<strong>in</strong> Cultural Production started <strong>in</strong> 1997.<br />

Content<br />

The aim of the programme is to teach students how to plan, manage, market <strong>and</strong> produce <strong>cultural</strong><br />

projects <strong>and</strong> events. The students will also learn how to lead activities <strong>in</strong> <strong>cultural</strong> venues, exhibition<br />

halls, galleries <strong>and</strong> similar <strong>in</strong>stitutions <strong>and</strong> where <strong>and</strong> how to apply for the fund<strong>in</strong>g of <strong>cultural</strong><br />

activities, both nationally <strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong>ternationally. The programme will provide knowledge <strong>in</strong> how culture is<br />

supported, produced, conveyed <strong>and</strong> adm<strong>in</strong>istered <strong>in</strong> F<strong>in</strong>l<strong>and</strong>.<br />

The studies ma<strong>in</strong>ly consist of practically oriented themes <strong>and</strong> project work, but also of lectures <strong>and</strong><br />

discussions. Furthermore, the studies <strong>in</strong>clude field trips, <strong>in</strong>terviews <strong>and</strong> meet<strong>in</strong>gs with experts <strong>in</strong><br />

work<strong>in</strong>g field. There are two l<strong>in</strong>es of study <strong>in</strong> the programme: culture producer or leisure manager.<br />

The ma<strong>in</strong> subjects are:<br />

- Cultural politics;<br />

- Cultural production <strong>and</strong> leadership;<br />

- Entrepreneurship, risks with<strong>in</strong> the <strong>cultural</strong> sector;<br />

- III sector;<br />

- Communication;<br />

- Art genres; <strong>and</strong><br />

- Academic levels of <strong>cultural</strong> sociology, public adm<strong>in</strong>istration.<br />

The programme produces a total of 140 credits/ 210 ECTS credits <strong>and</strong> is the only <strong>cultural</strong> producer<br />

programme <strong>in</strong> F<strong>in</strong>l<strong>and</strong> that is taught <strong>in</strong> Swedish. The clos<strong>in</strong>g date for application to the bachelor’s<br />

programme is <strong>in</strong> March every year. The part-time programme <strong>in</strong>takes new students every four years.<br />
