Background, orientation <strong>and</strong> purpose<br />

Profiles: Bulgaria<br />

The University "Neofit Rilski" was founded <strong>in</strong> 1976 as a branch of the Sofia University "Kliment<br />

Ohridski". The Department of Cultural Studies at the University was established <strong>in</strong> 1995 <strong>and</strong> now there<br />

are more than 250 students enrolled <strong>in</strong> bachelor <strong>and</strong> master programmes <strong>in</strong> two forms of education,<br />

regular <strong>and</strong> correspondence courses.<br />

Besides its educational purposes, one of the basic aims of the Department is to develop regional<br />

scientific <strong>and</strong> research cooperation. A concrete step towards the realisation of this idea was the<br />

<strong>in</strong>ternational scientific conference, ‘Culture <strong>and</strong> Challenges of the 21 century’, organised by the<br />

Department <strong>in</strong> April 2001. The ambition of the Department of Cultural Studies at the Faculty of Arts <strong>in</strong><br />

SWU is to develop a scientific network, a ‘Balcanica Humanitas’, for <strong>in</strong>ternational scientific <strong>and</strong><br />

<strong>in</strong>formation exchanges between similar Balkan <strong>and</strong> European <strong>cultural</strong> <strong>and</strong> educational <strong>in</strong>stitutions.<br />

Content<br />

BA / MA <strong>in</strong> Cultural Studies:<br />

Cultural Studies explores <strong>cultural</strong> theory, history <strong>and</strong> practice with a prime focus on Bulgaria <strong>and</strong><br />

Europe. Emphasis is placed on develop<strong>in</strong>g a critical underst<strong>and</strong><strong>in</strong>g of the historical development <strong>and</strong><br />

recurr<strong>in</strong>g themes <strong>in</strong> European culture. The discipl<strong>in</strong>e will help to <strong>in</strong>crease the underst<strong>and</strong><strong>in</strong>g by future<br />

<strong>cultural</strong> workers of the forthcom<strong>in</strong>g processes of European enlargement together with the ongo<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>in</strong>stitutional <strong>and</strong> organisational changes on local, national <strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong>ternational level; it will lead to the<br />

development of common <strong>cultural</strong> st<strong>and</strong>ards <strong>and</strong> values of action <strong>and</strong> th<strong>in</strong>k<strong>in</strong>g, <strong>and</strong> also towards the<br />

creation of cross-European forums for culturo-political discussion <strong>and</strong> debate.<br />

The Department is prepar<strong>in</strong>g a credit system.<br />

MA <strong>in</strong> Cultural Management - European Dimensions:<br />

The ‘Cultural Management - European Dimensions’ course of studies is conceived as a postgraduate<br />

programme provid<strong>in</strong>g complementary tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> the area of <strong>cultural</strong> <strong>management</strong>. At the core of the<br />

concept is a consistent effort to unify culture <strong>and</strong> <strong>management</strong> <strong>and</strong> to focus on specific aspects of<br />

<strong>cultural</strong> <strong>management</strong>. The pr<strong>in</strong>cipal feature of the programme is its comb<strong>in</strong>ed <strong>in</strong>terdiscipl<strong>in</strong>ary<br />

academic <strong>and</strong> practice-oriented approach. The deadl<strong>in</strong>e for applications is the end of July.<br />
