Background, orientation <strong>and</strong> purpose<br />

The Theatre Management Studio has existed s<strong>in</strong>ce 1990 with<strong>in</strong> the Theatre Faculty of Janacek<br />

Academy of Music <strong>and</strong> Perform<strong>in</strong>g Arts <strong>in</strong> Brno. The studio prepares three types of specialised theatre<br />

managers <strong>in</strong> its BA <strong>and</strong> MA study programmes. Students also ga<strong>in</strong> knowledge of other fields of <strong>cultural</strong><br />

<strong>management</strong>, though the emphasis is on the field of theatre.<br />

Students are given the opportunity to undertake several short-term attachments <strong>in</strong> different <strong>cultural</strong><br />

<strong>in</strong>stitutions, meet experts <strong>in</strong> theatre <strong>and</strong> <strong>cultural</strong> <strong>management</strong> from abroad <strong>and</strong> make use of their<br />

organisational abilities while manag<strong>in</strong>g shared projects <strong>in</strong> the Marta theatre studio <strong>and</strong> dur<strong>in</strong>g the<br />

International Festival of Art Schools Setkani/Encounter.<br />

PhD <strong>in</strong> Theatre Creation, specialisation <strong>in</strong> Theatre Management.<br />

BA / MA <strong>in</strong> Theatre Management - 3 years/5 years (full-time).<br />

BA <strong>in</strong> Stage Technology <strong>and</strong> Management - 3 years.<br />

PhD <strong>in</strong> Theatre Creation, specialisation <strong>in</strong> Theatre Management - 3 years.<br />

Content<br />

BA <strong>in</strong> Theatre Management:<br />

The ma<strong>in</strong> object of the Programme is to produce theatre managers who are able to fill <strong>in</strong>termediate<br />

positions <strong>in</strong> a theatre <strong>and</strong> to work <strong>in</strong>dependently. Their specialisation should be <strong>management</strong> of<br />

artistic ensembles, theatre market<strong>in</strong>g departments, artistic agencies <strong>and</strong> <strong>cultural</strong> projects. Students<br />

have to pass state exam<strong>in</strong>ations <strong>in</strong> the history of Czech theatre; the history of world theatre;<br />

<strong>management</strong>; theatre operation, theatre <strong>management</strong> <strong>and</strong> economics.<br />

MA <strong>in</strong> Theatre Management:<br />

The goal of the Programme is to produce theatre managers who can manage theatres <strong>and</strong> <strong>cultural</strong><br />

<strong>in</strong>stitutions, <strong>in</strong>ternational <strong>cultural</strong> projects, national <strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong>ternational festivals as well as be<strong>in</strong>g able to<br />

<strong>in</strong>itiate <strong>and</strong> run local government <strong>cultural</strong> agencies, at the same time work<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> the <strong>cultural</strong> field.<br />

BA <strong>in</strong> Stage Technology <strong>and</strong> Management:<br />

The goal of the programme is to create theatre managers who are able to lead technical teams<br />

work<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> the follow<strong>in</strong>g fields: stage light, stage sound, <strong>and</strong> stage construction. As stage managers,<br />

they are able to run theatre technical background thanks to their complex knowledge of all theatre<br />

problems, deep knowledge of theatre stage technology, good knowledge of foreign languages, <strong>and</strong><br />

their creativity. They should also be able to start <strong>and</strong> run their own agency. In the course of study<br />
