Background, orientation <strong>and</strong> purpose<br />

The Institute of Culture Management was established <strong>in</strong> 1990. It offers tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> <strong>cultural</strong><br />

<strong>management</strong>, <strong>cultural</strong> tourism, event <strong>management</strong> <strong>and</strong> museum <strong>management</strong>. The Institute of<br />

Culture Management also carries out its own research projects, particularly <strong>in</strong> the fields of municipal,<br />

regional <strong>and</strong> cross-border culture, as well as <strong>in</strong> the development of <strong>cultural</strong> tourism.<br />

Content<br />

The <strong>in</strong>terdiscipl<strong>in</strong>ary post-graduate courses Culture Management, Culture Tourism & Event<br />

Management <strong>and</strong> Museum Management target people already work<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> the <strong>cultural</strong> sector as well as<br />

university graduates look<strong>in</strong>g to specialise <strong>and</strong> deepen their studies.<br />

Keep<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> m<strong>in</strong>d both the reduction of the scope of state public f<strong>in</strong>anc<strong>in</strong>g of the <strong>cultural</strong> area <strong>and</strong> the<br />

<strong>in</strong>crease <strong>in</strong> the need for qualification on the other, the courses aim to make <strong>cultural</strong> activities more<br />

professional <strong>and</strong> economically sound.<br />

The <strong>in</strong>troduction of sound scientific knowledge as the ma<strong>in</strong> course content enables students to reflect<br />

critically about the relationship between culture <strong>and</strong> political, historical, systematic <strong>and</strong> theoretical<br />

<strong>in</strong>terests, as well as to consider <strong>in</strong>ter<strong>cultural</strong> ways of th<strong>in</strong>k<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

Follow<strong>in</strong>g this, the course focuses on the discussion of issues relevant to <strong>management</strong>, such as<br />

enterprise leadership, market<strong>in</strong>g, <strong>in</strong>vestment <strong>and</strong> f<strong>in</strong>anc<strong>in</strong>g, project <strong>management</strong>, quality<br />

<strong>management</strong> <strong>and</strong> control, the acquisition of external f<strong>in</strong>ance support, media communication <strong>and</strong> socio<strong>cultural</strong><br />

<strong>management</strong>. These topics are targeted towards the needs of professional practice <strong>in</strong> all<br />

branches of the <strong>cultural</strong> sector.<br />

Evaluation <strong>and</strong> assessment<br />

Student performance is evaluated through exam<strong>in</strong>ations, papers <strong>and</strong> a f<strong>in</strong>al paper/thesis.<br />

Lecturers<br />

The number of teach<strong>in</strong>g personnel is three, two of whom are women. Two are permanent <strong>and</strong> one is<br />

visit<strong>in</strong>g. The person responsible for the study programmes is Prof. Dr Thomas He<strong>in</strong>ze.<br />
