Contents<br />

Year One:<br />

You will exam<strong>in</strong>e the broad def<strong>in</strong>itions of heritage, together with philosophical <strong>and</strong> ethical issues. You<br />

will also be <strong>in</strong>troduced to the practices <strong>in</strong>volved <strong>in</strong> heritage <strong>management</strong>. This is achieved by<br />

observ<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> analys<strong>in</strong>g active heritage <strong>management</strong>, through visits <strong>and</strong> guest speakers.<br />

Year Two:<br />

You will focus on two ma<strong>in</strong> modules <strong>in</strong> the second year. The Preservation <strong>and</strong> Conservation module<br />

<strong>in</strong>vestigates the theory <strong>and</strong> practice of manag<strong>in</strong>g heritage resources <strong>in</strong> sites <strong>and</strong> collections, cover<strong>in</strong>g<br />

issues <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g care, documentation, preventive conservation <strong>and</strong> presentation.<br />

In Communication, Interpretation <strong>and</strong> Education you will exam<strong>in</strong>e ways <strong>in</strong> which the significance of<br />

managed resources is communicated through <strong>in</strong>terpretation <strong>and</strong> education services.<br />

Year Three:<br />

The f<strong>in</strong>al year concentrates on develop<strong>in</strong>g advanced skills <strong>in</strong> heritage <strong>management</strong>. One module<br />

focuses on bus<strong>in</strong>ess aspects, such as fiscal <strong>and</strong> human resource <strong>management</strong> <strong>and</strong> market<strong>in</strong>g. The<br />

second will consolidate your learn<strong>in</strong>g through a negotiated project, which can be completed <strong>in</strong> t<strong>and</strong>em<br />

with the core dissertation module.<br />

Entry requirements:<br />

Most students will have studied history, or a related subject, at A level. However, we also welcome<br />

applicants with different qualifications but with a strong <strong>and</strong> proven <strong>in</strong>terest <strong>in</strong> heritage.<br />

Not all applicants are asked for <strong>in</strong>terview, but everyone is welcome to visit or telephone us to discuss<br />

the course <strong>and</strong> their plans.<br />
