Content<br />

This excit<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong>novative programme enables students to realise their creative potential <strong>in</strong> the<br />

visual arts, drama or creative writ<strong>in</strong>g alongside the study of key aspects of arts education. Education<br />

is conceived of <strong>in</strong> its broadest sense <strong>and</strong> students are encouraged to reflect upon their arts practice <strong>in</strong><br />

a social context.<br />

The programmes offered by the School focus on performance <strong>and</strong> the arts <strong>in</strong> their <strong>cultural</strong> <strong>and</strong><br />

commercial context. Previous alumni of Bretton Hall <strong>in</strong>clude the creators of the TV cult series The<br />

League of Gentlemen, Wayne McGregor, founder of the <strong>in</strong>ternationally renowned R<strong>and</strong>om Dance<br />

Company <strong>and</strong> comedian Mark Thomas.<br />

The programme facilitates work <strong>in</strong> the wider community, <strong>in</strong> arts centres, <strong>in</strong> schools <strong>and</strong> museums so<br />

students participate <strong>in</strong> a range of community projects, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g an extended period of work-based<br />

learn<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> the second year. Students from all discipl<strong>in</strong>es come together to share ideas <strong>and</strong> collaborate<br />

across art forms.<br />

In the first year of the visual arts specialism students experience a wide range of media. In the second<br />

<strong>and</strong> third years they can follow a personal programme of enquiry <strong>in</strong> a chosen medium, culm<strong>in</strong>at<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong><br />

a f<strong>in</strong>al exhibition.<br />

Drama students comb<strong>in</strong>e skills-based modules with work which enables them to apply these skills <strong>in</strong> a<br />

variety of sett<strong>in</strong>gs (such as hospitals, schools <strong>and</strong> day centres).<br />

Creative writ<strong>in</strong>g allows students to explore a variety of genres (such as poetry or scriptwrit<strong>in</strong>g) <strong>and</strong> to<br />

realise creative projects <strong>in</strong> areas such as video <strong>and</strong> photography.<br />

Entry requirements<br />

The normal entry requirements of the University of Leeds are three "A" levels or equivalent academic<br />

qualifications. However, the University recognises that professional <strong>and</strong> practical elements are part of<br />

the degrees offered at the Bretton Hall Campus <strong>and</strong> applicants who can demonstrate high levels of<br />

ability <strong>in</strong> their chosen area, or can give evidence of previous professional experience, will be<br />

considered with two "A" levels or equivalent academic qualifications.<br />

Applications from mature students with previous relevant experience are particularly welcome.<br />
