Background, orientation <strong>and</strong> purpose<br />

The Unit for the Study of Cultural Adm<strong>in</strong>istration <strong>in</strong> the University of Ed<strong>in</strong>burgh was created <strong>in</strong> 1996. It<br />

replaced AMTIS, the Arts Management <strong>Tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g</strong> Initiative (Scotl<strong>and</strong>), which was created <strong>in</strong> 1989 <strong>and</strong><br />

which, <strong>in</strong> turn, developed from work begun <strong>in</strong> 1976.<br />

The ma<strong>in</strong> objective of the USCA is to provide a focus for postgraduate research <strong>in</strong> <strong>cultural</strong><br />

adm<strong>in</strong>istration <strong>in</strong> the University<br />

Programme(s) <strong>and</strong> qualification(s)<br />

USCA welcomes applications at any time from suitably qualified <strong>and</strong> experienced people who wish to<br />

pursue MSc/MPhil or, more commonly, PhD research <strong>in</strong> an aspect of <strong>cultural</strong> adm<strong>in</strong>istration with<strong>in</strong> the<br />

social sciences.<br />

At present (May 2002) USCA is particularly <strong>in</strong>terested <strong>in</strong> proposals from c<strong>and</strong>idates who wish to<br />

pursue PhD research <strong>in</strong> the follow<strong>in</strong>g areas of <strong>in</strong>vestigation:<br />

- The <strong>management</strong> of tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> development <strong>in</strong> the <strong>cultural</strong> sector;<br />

- The adm<strong>in</strong>istration of national <strong>cultural</strong> <strong>in</strong>stitutions; <strong>and</strong><br />

- The adm<strong>in</strong>istration of heritage education.<br />

Lecturers<br />

The number of teach<strong>in</strong>g personnel varies from year to year. USCA draws on about 20 regulars from<br />

various departments of the University. About 50 percent of these are female.<br />

Entry requirements<br />

C<strong>and</strong>idates should already hold a postgraduate master’s degree <strong>in</strong> a relevant discipl<strong>in</strong>e. Appropriate<br />

experience is considered.<br />
