Background, orientation <strong>and</strong> purpose<br />

The M.A. European Urban Cultures (MA EUC) is a full-time, postgraduate degree, established <strong>in</strong> 1997,<br />

jo<strong>in</strong>tly developed by four European universities:<br />

the Catholic University of Brabant, Tilburg (Netherl<strong>and</strong>s);<br />

the Flemish Free University of Brussels (Belgium);<br />

Hels<strong>in</strong>ki University of Art <strong>and</strong> Design (F<strong>in</strong>l<strong>and</strong>); <strong>and</strong><br />

the Manchester Metropolitan University (UK).<br />

Content<br />

The MA <strong>in</strong> European Urban Cultures (MA EUC) offers a specialist programme aimed at graduate<br />

students from Europe <strong>and</strong> elsewhere with undergraduate degrees <strong>in</strong> subject areas such as the social<br />

sciences, <strong>cultural</strong> <strong>and</strong> leisure studies, art, design <strong>and</strong> architecture, urban theory <strong>and</strong> plann<strong>in</strong>g or<br />

<strong>cultural</strong> market<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> <strong>management</strong>. The course is also targeted at professionals <strong>and</strong> adm<strong>in</strong>istrators<br />

eager for the latest experiences, ideas <strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong>sights <strong>in</strong>to urban <strong>cultural</strong> <strong>policy</strong>.<br />

A number of features make the learn<strong>in</strong>g experience <strong>in</strong> this course unique:<br />

- a jo<strong>in</strong>t curriculum developed by the four universities allows each to offer courses <strong>and</strong> project work<br />

associated with particular staff expertise <strong>and</strong> research <strong>in</strong>terests;<br />

- a multidiscipl<strong>in</strong>ary approach, draw<strong>in</strong>g on discipl<strong>in</strong>es such as urban theory <strong>and</strong> plann<strong>in</strong>g;<br />

sociology, <strong>cultural</strong> <strong>and</strong> leisure studies, <strong>cultural</strong> <strong>management</strong>, architecture <strong>and</strong> design;<br />

- a ‘project work’ unit based on the current research programmes of the staff <strong>in</strong>volved <strong>in</strong> deliver<strong>in</strong>g<br />

the course;<br />

- an explicit European <strong>and</strong> transnational comparative perspective;<br />

- an opportunity for students to travel <strong>in</strong> Europe <strong>and</strong> spend time study<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> liv<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> four European<br />

cities <strong>in</strong> an <strong>in</strong>ternational student group;<br />

- an opportunity to experience a cross-national diversity of academic contexts <strong>and</strong> a cross-national<br />

diversity of urban development projects; <strong>and</strong><br />

- an opportunity to work with a variety of <strong>in</strong>formation <strong>and</strong> communication technologies, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g GIS,<br />

WWW, DTP, MAC <strong>and</strong> MULTIMEDIA.<br />
