ON LU HSUN<br />

If I remember correctly, Lu Hsun once said that at first all [<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>m]<br />

were “left” and re<strong>vol</strong>utionary, but as soon as pressure came, [<strong>the</strong>y]<br />

changed and presented <strong>the</strong>ir comrades [<strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> enemy] as a gift. Lu<br />

Hsun bitterly hated th<strong>is</strong> sort <strong>of</strong> people. While fighting against <strong>the</strong>m,<br />

he educated and d<strong>is</strong>ciplined <strong>the</strong> young writers who followed him.<br />

He taught <strong>the</strong>m <strong>to</strong> fight resolutely, <strong>to</strong> be vanguards, and <strong>to</strong> find <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

own way.<br />

H<strong>is</strong> third character<strong>is</strong>tic was h<strong>is</strong> readiness <strong>to</strong> sacrifice himself,<br />

completely fearless <strong>of</strong> enemy intimidation and persecution and utterly<br />

unmoved by enemy enticement. With merciless pungency h<strong>is</strong><br />

sword-like pen cut all those he desp<strong>is</strong>ed. Among <strong>the</strong> bloodstains <strong>of</strong><br />

re<strong>vol</strong>utionary fighters he showed h<strong>is</strong> tenacious defiance and marched<br />

FROM MARX<br />

TO MAO<br />

ahead while calling [<strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>rs <strong>to</strong> follow him]. Lu Hsun was an<br />

⋆<br />

absolute real<strong>is</strong>t, always uncomprom<strong>is</strong>ing, always determined. In one<br />

<strong>of</strong> h<strong>is</strong> essays he maintained that one should [continue <strong>to</strong>] beat a dog<br />

after it had fallen in water. If you did not, <strong>the</strong> dog would jump up<br />

ei<strong>the</strong>r <strong>to</strong> bite you or at least <strong>to</strong> shake a lot <strong>of</strong> dirty water over you.<br />

Therefore <strong>the</strong> beating had <strong>to</strong> be thorough. Lu Hsun did not entertain<br />

a speck <strong>of</strong> sentimental<strong>is</strong>m or hypocr<strong>is</strong>y.<br />

Now <strong>the</strong> mad dog, Japanese imperial<strong>is</strong>m, had not been beaten in<br />

water yet. We must learn th<strong>is</strong> “Lu Hsun spirit” and apply it <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

whole country.<br />

These character<strong>is</strong>tics NOT are <strong>the</strong> components FOR <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> great “Lu Hsun<br />

spirit”. Throughout h<strong>is</strong> life Lu Hsun never deviated from th<strong>is</strong> spirit<br />

and that <strong>is</strong> why he was an outstanding writer in <strong>the</strong> world <strong>of</strong> letters<br />

and a <strong>to</strong>ugh, excellent COMMERCIAL<br />

vanguard in <strong>the</strong> re<strong>vol</strong>utionary ranks. As we<br />

commemorate him, we must learn h<strong>is</strong> spirit. [We] must take it <strong>to</strong> all<br />

<strong>the</strong> units engaged in <strong>the</strong> Res<strong>is</strong>tance War and use it in <strong>the</strong> struggle<br />

for our national liberation.<br />
