2. SURPRISE ATTACKS IN A <strong>VI</strong>LLAGE<br />

<strong>It</strong> <strong>is</strong> most advantageous <strong>to</strong> attack <strong>the</strong> enemy’s foraging units in a<br />

village. At such a time <strong>the</strong> greater part <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> enemy’s foraging unit<br />

<strong>is</strong> scattered all over <strong>the</strong> place, and it <strong>is</strong> not easy for <strong>the</strong>m <strong>to</strong> ga<strong>the</strong>r<br />

<strong>to</strong>ge<strong>the</strong>r quickly. But, in carrying out th<strong>is</strong> type <strong>of</strong> surpr<strong>is</strong>e attack<br />

we must steal by <strong>the</strong> enemy’s warning outposts or capture h<strong>is</strong> sentinels<br />

without <strong>the</strong> slightest sound; only <strong>the</strong>n can we make our attack.<br />

FROM MARX<br />

TO MAO<br />

3. SURPRISE ATTACKS OUTSIDE A <strong>VI</strong>LLAGE<br />

<strong>It</strong> <strong>the</strong> force carrying out a surpr<strong>is</strong>e attack <strong>is</strong> especially weak, it<br />

⋆<br />

must wait until <strong>the</strong> foraging <strong>is</strong> completed and until <strong>the</strong> foraging column<br />

has reached a place favourable <strong>to</strong> a surpr<strong>is</strong>e attack — such as<br />

when it <strong>is</strong> passing through a forest, across a bridge, or along a narrow<br />

road — before attacking.<br />

4. THE OBJECTIVES OF THE SURPRISE ATTACK<br />

NOT FOR<br />

COMMERCIAL<br />

When a guerrilla unit has attacked and d<strong>is</strong>persed <strong>the</strong> enemy unit<br />

covering a foraging operation, it can reckon only that it has completed<br />

part <strong>of</strong> its attack. <strong>It</strong> must also destroy or capture all <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

wagons. Consequently, <strong>the</strong> guerrilla unit should first engage <strong>the</strong><br />

enemy covering unit in combat and <strong>the</strong>n attack <strong>the</strong> log<strong>is</strong>tic convoy<br />

with its main force and capture it.<br />

DISTRIBUTION<br />

5. POINTS TO WHICH THE GUERRILLA UNIT<br />

SHOULD PAY ATTENTION<br />

<strong>It</strong> <strong>is</strong> easy <strong>to</strong> obtain <strong>the</strong> ass<strong>is</strong>tance <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> local population when<br />

attacking one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> enemy’s foraging units. Hence, within <strong>the</strong> limits<br />

<strong>of</strong> what <strong>is</strong> possible, part <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> property seized should be given<br />

<strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> popular masses, <strong>to</strong> heighten <strong>the</strong>ir courage.
