In h<strong>is</strong> lecture at Changsha, Russell . . . <strong>to</strong>ok a position in favour<br />

<strong>of</strong> commun<strong>is</strong>m but against <strong>the</strong> dicta<strong>to</strong>rship <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> workers and peasants.<br />

He said that one should employ <strong>the</strong> method <strong>of</strong> education <strong>to</strong><br />

change <strong>the</strong> consciousness <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> propertied classes, and that in th<strong>is</strong><br />

way it would not be necessary <strong>to</strong> limit freedom or <strong>to</strong> have recourse<br />

<strong>to</strong> war and bloody re<strong>vol</strong>ution. . . . My objections <strong>to</strong> Russell’s viewpoint<br />

can be stated in a few words: “<strong>Th<strong>is</strong></strong> <strong>is</strong> all very well as a <strong>the</strong>ory,<br />

but it <strong>is</strong> unfeasible in practice.”. . . Education requires money, people<br />

and instruments. In <strong>to</strong>day’s world money <strong>is</strong> entirely in <strong>the</strong> hands <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> capital<strong>is</strong>ts. Those who have charge <strong>of</strong> education are all ei<strong>the</strong>r<br />

capital<strong>is</strong>ts or wives <strong>of</strong> capital<strong>is</strong>ts. In <strong>to</strong>day’s world <strong>the</strong> schools and<br />

<strong>the</strong> press, <strong>the</strong> two most important instruments <strong>of</strong> education are en-<br />

tirely under capital<strong>is</strong>t control. In short, education in <strong>to</strong>day’s world<br />

<strong>is</strong> capital<strong>is</strong>t education. If we teach capital<strong>is</strong>m <strong>to</strong> children, <strong>the</strong>se<br />

children, when <strong>the</strong>y grow up will in turn teach capital<strong>is</strong>m <strong>to</strong> a sec-<br />

ond generation <strong>of</strong> children. Education thus remains in <strong>the</strong> hands <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> capital<strong>is</strong>ts. Then <strong>the</strong> capital<strong>is</strong>ts have “parliaments” <strong>to</strong> pass laws<br />

protecting <strong>the</strong> capital<strong>is</strong>ts and handicapping <strong>the</strong> proletariat; <strong>the</strong>y have<br />

“governments” <strong>to</strong> apply <strong>the</strong>se laws and <strong>to</strong> enforce <strong>the</strong> advantages<br />

and <strong>the</strong> prohibitions that <strong>the</strong>y contain; <strong>the</strong>y have “armies” and “po-<br />

lice” <strong>to</strong> defend <strong>the</strong> well-being <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> capital<strong>is</strong>ts and <strong>to</strong> repress <strong>the</strong><br />

demands <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> proletariat; <strong>the</strong>y have “banks” <strong>to</strong> serve as reposi<strong>to</strong>ries<br />

in <strong>the</strong> circulation <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir wealth; <strong>the</strong>y have “fac<strong>to</strong>ries”, which<br />

are <strong>the</strong> instruments by which <strong>the</strong>y monopolize <strong>the</strong> production <strong>of</strong><br />

goods. Thus, if <strong>the</strong> commun<strong>is</strong>ts do not seize political power, <strong>the</strong>y<br />

will not be able <strong>to</strong> find any refuge in th<strong>is</strong> world; how, under such<br />

circumstances, could <strong>the</strong>y take charge <strong>of</strong> education? Thus, <strong>the</strong> capital<strong>is</strong>ts<br />

will continue <strong>to</strong> control education and <strong>to</strong> pra<strong>is</strong>e <strong>the</strong>ir capital<br />
