power, <strong>the</strong>ir knowledge <strong>of</strong> local terrain and local cus<strong>to</strong>ms, and <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

information <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> enemy.<br />

The third type <strong>is</strong> <strong>the</strong> guerrilla regiment, which cons<strong>is</strong>ts <strong>of</strong> from<br />

two <strong>to</strong> four <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> above-mentioned battalion units. If sufficient<br />

manpower <strong>is</strong> available, a guerrilla brigade <strong>of</strong> from two <strong>to</strong> four regiments<br />

may be formed.<br />

Each <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> units has its own peculiarities <strong>of</strong> organization. A<br />

squad, <strong>the</strong> smallest unit, has a strength <strong>of</strong> from nine <strong>to</strong> eleven men,<br />

including <strong>the</strong> leader and <strong>the</strong> ass<strong>is</strong>tant leader. <strong>It</strong>s arms may be from<br />

two <strong>to</strong> five Western-style rifles, with <strong>the</strong> remaining men armed with<br />

rifles <strong>of</strong> local manufacture, fowling-pieces, etc., spears, or big<br />

swords. Two <strong>to</strong> four such squads form a pla<strong>to</strong>on. <strong>Th<strong>is</strong></strong> <strong>to</strong>o has a<br />

leader and an ass<strong>is</strong>tant leader, and when acting independently, it <strong>is</strong><br />

⋆<br />

assigned a political <strong>of</strong>ficer <strong>to</strong> carry on political propaganda work.<br />

The pla<strong>to</strong>on may have about ten rifles, with <strong>the</strong> remainder <strong>of</strong> its<br />

weapons being fowling-pieces, lances, and big swords. Two <strong>to</strong> four<br />

<strong>of</strong> such units from a company, which, like <strong>the</strong> pla<strong>to</strong>on, has a leader,<br />

an ass<strong>is</strong>tant leader, and a political <strong>of</strong>ficer. All <strong>the</strong>se units are under<br />

<strong>the</strong> direct superv<strong>is</strong>ion <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> military commanders <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> areas in<br />

which <strong>the</strong>y operate.<br />

The battalion unit must be more thoroughly organized and better<br />

equipped than <strong>the</strong> smaller units. <strong>It</strong>s d<strong>is</strong>cipline and its personnel<br />

should be superior. If NOT a battalion <strong>is</strong> FOR formed from company units, it<br />

should not deprive subordinate units entirely <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir manpower and<br />

<strong>the</strong>ir arms. If in a small area, <strong>the</strong>re <strong>is</strong> a peace-preservation corps, a<br />

branch <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> militia, COMMERCIAL<br />

or police, regular guerrilla units should not be<br />

d<strong>is</strong>persed over it.<br />

The guerrilla unit next in size <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> battalion <strong>is</strong> <strong>the</strong> regiment.<br />

<strong>Th<strong>is</strong></strong> must be under more severe d<strong>is</strong>cipline than <strong>the</strong> battalion. In an<br />

independent guerrilla DISTRIBUTION<br />

regiment, <strong>the</strong>re may be ten men per squad,<br />

three squad per pla<strong>to</strong>on, three pla<strong>to</strong>ons per company, three companies<br />

per battalion, and three battalions <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> regiment. Two <strong>of</strong> such<br />

regiments form a brigade. Each <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>se units has a commander, a<br />

vice-commander, and a political <strong>of</strong>ficer.<br />

In North China, guerrilla cavalry units should be establ<strong>is</strong>hed.<br />

These may be regiments <strong>of</strong> from two <strong>to</strong> four companies, or battalions.<br />

All <strong>the</strong>se units from <strong>the</strong> lowest <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> highest are combatant guerrilla<br />

units and receive <strong>the</strong>ir supplies from <strong>the</strong> central government.<br />

Details <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir organizational structure are shown in <strong>the</strong> tables in<br />
