because <strong>the</strong>re are people continually going in and out <strong>of</strong> a<br />

hiding place and it can very easily be d<strong>is</strong>covered by <strong>the</strong> enemy.<br />

4. The more individuals <strong>the</strong>re are among <strong>the</strong> people who support<br />

<strong>the</strong> guerrillas, so that <strong>the</strong> guerrilla unit can also maintain a communications<br />

network among <strong>the</strong> people, <strong>the</strong> easier it <strong>is</strong> for <strong>the</strong> guerrilla<br />

unit <strong>to</strong> find a hiding place. There are times when, in order <strong>to</strong><br />

evade <strong>the</strong> enemy’s pursuit and attack, and find a good place <strong>to</strong> hide,<br />

a given guerrilla unit must be split up, each <strong>of</strong> its members being<br />

obliged <strong>to</strong> find a way <strong>to</strong> hide himself in one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> houses <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

local population. In such circumstances, <strong>the</strong> local population <strong>is</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

only hope <strong>of</strong> salvation <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> members <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> guerrilla unit.<br />

3. THE QUESTION OF PRO<strong>VI</strong>SIONS<br />

In places where <strong>the</strong> local population <strong>is</strong> hostile <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> guerrillas,<br />

<strong>the</strong>re <strong>is</strong> no alternative <strong>to</strong> foraging backed by force, but one should<br />

send reliable people from among <strong>the</strong> detachment, in order <strong>to</strong> guard<br />

against pillaging. When <strong>the</strong> guerrilla unit does not fear d<strong>is</strong>covery,<br />

it can send out a special small unit <strong>to</strong> forage for food, <strong>to</strong> collect<br />

contributions <strong>of</strong> food, or <strong>to</strong> demand food supplies from <strong>the</strong> local<br />

authorities.<br />

4. CHANGING ONE’S HALTING PLACE<br />

DISTRIBUTION<br />

The best method by which a guerrilla unit can maintain its own<br />

security <strong>is</strong> through <strong>the</strong> agility <strong>of</strong> its action. In case <strong>of</strong> necessity, <strong>the</strong><br />

unit can make a habit <strong>of</strong> changing its halting place every night (if,<br />

during <strong>the</strong> day, it has been in village A, at twilight it moves <strong>to</strong> village<br />

B).<br />

5. OCCUPYING A HALTING PLACE<br />

When a guerrilla unit encamps, <strong>the</strong> arrangement <strong>of</strong> its forces<br />

should be determined entirely by <strong>the</strong> nature <strong>of</strong> its action, but it should
