<strong>of</strong> wages in a privately owned fac<strong>to</strong>ry), and 20-30 yuan at <strong>the</strong> least.<br />

<strong>Th<strong>is</strong></strong> increased <strong>the</strong> workers’ enthusiasm <strong>to</strong> produce. Some workers<br />

did not take <strong>the</strong>ir noon rest and did not s<strong>to</strong>p work at <strong>the</strong> end <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>working</strong> day but kept an <strong>working</strong>. After some persuasion and education,<br />

we overcame th<strong>is</strong> excessive enthusiasm.<br />

We pers<strong>is</strong>ted in <strong>the</strong> soldier-worker system. The fac<strong>to</strong>ry workers<br />

also grew vegetables and ra<strong>is</strong>ed pigs for <strong>the</strong>ir food.<br />

In <strong>the</strong> winter <strong>of</strong> 1942 we s<strong>to</strong>pped work for one month <strong>to</strong> make<br />

padded clothing.<br />

In 1941 after all expenses, <strong>the</strong> fac<strong>to</strong>ry made a pr<strong>of</strong>it <strong>of</strong> 3,900,000<br />

yuan. In <strong>the</strong> first ten months <strong>of</strong> 1942, <strong>the</strong> pr<strong>of</strong>it was 8 million yuan.<br />

eral million more <strong>to</strong> maintain reproduction.<br />

In sum <strong>the</strong> lessons <strong>of</strong> experience in running industry are as follows:<br />

(i) The pr<strong>of</strong>it earned by <strong>the</strong> soldier-workers <strong>working</strong> in textiles,<br />

that <strong>is</strong> <strong>the</strong> Daguang Hill led by <strong>the</strong> brigade supply department, <strong>is</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> largest <strong>of</strong> all <strong>the</strong> pr<strong>of</strong>its earned by <strong>the</strong> various industrial enterpr<strong>is</strong>es.<br />

In 1941 <strong>the</strong> <strong>to</strong>tal number <strong>of</strong> employees was 250 and in 1942 it<br />

were 225. After all expenses its pr<strong>of</strong>it in 1941 was 3,900,000 yuan,<br />

equivalent <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> price <strong>of</strong> 4,000 tan <strong>of</strong> millet at <strong>the</strong> year-end price<br />

(300 jin per tan).<br />

Pr<strong>of</strong>it by Oc<strong>to</strong>ber 1942 NOT was 8 million FORyuan,<br />

again equivalent <strong>to</strong><br />

4,000 tan <strong>of</strong> millet at current prices in Suide. The average net pr<strong>of</strong>it<br />

per worker was roughly 18 tan.<br />

In <strong>the</strong> light <strong>of</strong> COMMERCIAL<br />

two years’ experience and <strong>the</strong> present circumstances,<br />

we shall invest 25,000 yuan per head for <strong>the</strong> 225 employees<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> fac<strong>to</strong>ry during 1943, not counting buildings and <strong>to</strong>ols, making<br />

a <strong>to</strong>tal <strong>of</strong> 5,625,000 yuan. The cloth required for uniforms will be<br />

bought from <strong>the</strong> DISTRIBUTION<br />

fac<strong>to</strong>ry. In th<strong>is</strong> way production for 1943 will earn a<br />

net pr<strong>of</strong>it per man <strong>of</strong> 20 tan <strong>of</strong> millet (because <strong>of</strong> inflation, it <strong>is</strong> best<br />

<strong>to</strong> take millet as <strong>the</strong> standard).<br />

Each regiment has a cloth-weaving fac<strong>to</strong>ry which can produce<br />

enough cloth for a hundred men.<br />

In addition, apart from undertakings purely for producing equipment<br />

and clothing for <strong>the</strong> troops such as shoemaking, cloths-making<br />

and lea<strong>the</strong>r-tanning, <strong>the</strong> brigade also has roughly 200 blacksmiths<br />

and carpenters. In <strong>the</strong> light <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> past two <strong>to</strong> three years’ experience<br />

and <strong>the</strong> prospects for <strong>the</strong> continued development <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Border<br />

Region economy, <strong>the</strong>se craftsmen could make an annual pr<strong>of</strong>it
