Most <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> women from <strong>the</strong> villages had come because <strong>of</strong> marriage<br />

problems. They had been sent <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> fac<strong>to</strong>ry by <strong>the</strong> women’s<br />

aid committee <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> government. Whenever <strong>the</strong>y talked <strong>of</strong> marriage,<br />

some cried and some laughed. They <strong>of</strong>ten asked for help in<br />

solving <strong>the</strong>ir marriage problems.<br />

Persuading captured bandits <strong>to</strong> work was difficult.<br />

Many <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> people being pun<strong>is</strong>hed for m<strong>is</strong>takes were company<br />

and pla<strong>to</strong>on cadres who maintained <strong>the</strong>ir old character, were unwilling<br />

<strong>to</strong> work and were troublemakers.<br />

<strong>From</strong> January <strong>to</strong> March 1941 <strong>the</strong> head <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> supply department<br />

FROM MARX<br />

TO MAO<br />

During th<strong>is</strong> time, approximately twenty skilled workers acted as<br />

⋆<br />

master-workers and taught <strong>the</strong> youths in <strong>the</strong> weaving group. First<br />

<strong>the</strong>y used <strong>the</strong> small looms (needed little strength and easy <strong>to</strong> manage).<br />

The master-worker did all <strong>the</strong> preliminaries and <strong>to</strong>ld <strong>the</strong>m how<br />

<strong>to</strong> start <strong>the</strong> loom, how <strong>to</strong> connect broken threads, how <strong>to</strong> handle <strong>the</strong><br />

shuttle, and how <strong>to</strong> co-ordinate hand and foot. At <strong>the</strong> beginning<br />

<strong>the</strong>y only wove for two or three hours a day. After one or two months,<br />

th<strong>is</strong> group had mastered <strong>the</strong>se looms and moved on<strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> large<br />

wooden ones, and ano<strong>the</strong>r group came <strong>to</strong> learn. Thus group-by-group<br />

<strong>the</strong> teaching went on until March 1941.<br />

The work <strong>of</strong> joining NOT <strong>the</strong> threads FOR and threading was easy <strong>to</strong> learn<br />

and only needed patience. Once you had learned <strong>to</strong> join <strong>the</strong> threads<br />

properly, you were all right. But it needed practice. When unpracticed,<br />

<strong>the</strong> results COMMERCIAL<br />

were not good enough for weaving.<br />

When <strong>the</strong> work began and <strong>the</strong> young apprentices sat at <strong>the</strong> looms<br />

or did <strong>the</strong>ir joining and threading, <strong>the</strong>ir backsides ached after a short<br />

time, yarn easily broke, tempers rose, <strong>the</strong>re was little patience and<br />

<strong>the</strong>y wasted a lot DISTRIBUTION<br />

<strong>of</strong> thread and broke some looms. So, before March<br />

1941 products were no good.<br />

Apart from streng<strong>the</strong>ning technical training and ra<strong>is</strong>ing technical<br />

skills, <strong>the</strong> chief way <strong>of</strong> dealing with th<strong>is</strong> was political encouragement<br />

and education in re<strong>vol</strong>utionary labour d<strong>is</strong>cipline. <strong>Th<strong>is</strong></strong> made<br />

<strong>the</strong> workers consciously realize <strong>the</strong> important significance <strong>of</strong> production,<br />

made <strong>the</strong>m patient in <strong>the</strong>ir work and improved <strong>the</strong>ir enthusiasm<br />

for production and <strong>the</strong>ir labour d<strong>is</strong>cipline.<br />

Various methods <strong>of</strong> education were used <strong>to</strong> implement military<br />

d<strong>is</strong>cipline. The head <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> supply department, He Weizhong, <strong>the</strong><br />

head <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> military training unit and <strong>the</strong> branch Party Secretary per-<br />
