and trains, tanks and air planes does <strong>the</strong> enemy have? And where<br />

are <strong>the</strong>y?<br />

2. What kind <strong>of</strong> defensive works does <strong>the</strong> enemy have in h<strong>is</strong><br />

front, in h<strong>is</strong> rear, and around h<strong>is</strong> cities and o<strong>the</strong>r places? What kind<br />

<strong>of</strong> forces are defending?<br />

3. Where are <strong>the</strong> enemy’s encampments and arsenals?<br />

4. ESPIONAGE REGARDING THE TERRAIN<br />

1. First <strong>of</strong> all, we must pay attention <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> important roads within<br />

th<strong>is</strong> area, as well as <strong>the</strong>ir direction, <strong>the</strong>ir width, <strong>the</strong>ir type <strong>of</strong> sur-<br />

face, whe<strong>the</strong>r or not <strong>the</strong>y are muddy, etc., and whe<strong>the</strong>r or not <strong>the</strong>y<br />

are suitable for use by all types <strong>of</strong> forces.<br />

2. Are <strong>the</strong>re any forests or not? If <strong>the</strong>re are, we must pay attention<br />

<strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> kinds <strong>of</strong> trees, and <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir area.<br />

3. We must consider rivers, <strong>the</strong>ir width and depth, <strong>the</strong>ir rate <strong>of</strong><br />

flow, <strong>the</strong> slope and type <strong>of</strong> soil <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> banks. Are <strong>the</strong>re bridges,<br />

ferries, or o<strong>the</strong>r means for crossing <strong>the</strong> river? If <strong>the</strong>re are bridges,<br />

will <strong>the</strong>y bear up under artillery, <strong>the</strong> baggage train, and o<strong>the</strong>r types<br />

<strong>of</strong> unit?<br />

4. Are <strong>the</strong>re any marshes? Where? What <strong>is</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir area? Can<br />

<strong>the</strong>y be crossed or not? If so, we must note what kinds <strong>of</strong> troops can<br />

get through <strong>the</strong>m.
