campestanol and 0.0441 ± 0.0041% for -sitostanol (Ostlund et al., 2002). The<br />

Committee noted that the method <strong>of</strong> determination (differential determination <strong>of</strong><br />

substance not excreted with faeces versus determination <strong>of</strong> oral to intravenous<br />

tracer ratios) and the form <strong>of</strong> administration may partly explain the differences in the<br />

bioavailability compared with older studies reviewed by the Scientific Committee on<br />

Food (2002).<br />

Intestinal absorption <strong>of</strong> phytosterols is drastically increased in a rare autosomal<br />

recessive disease called sitosterolaemia (or phytosterolaemia). Patients<br />
