<strong>Saginaw</strong> <strong>County</strong> Local Emergency Planning Committee and Community<br />

Right To Know Committee to better prepare our <strong>County</strong> to respond to<br />

chemical emergencies.<br />

The Clerk called on Commissioner Foxx who introduced individuals<br />

from Buena Vista High School: Imo Taylor, Principal; Londia<br />

Langston, Associate Superintendent of Curriculum and Instructions;<br />

Grace Witherspoon, Teacher; Russell Chaffer, student; and Tonya<br />

Brown, supporter and cheerleader. He presented them with the<br />

resolution, as follows:<br />

RESOLUTION OF ACKNOWLEDGMENT<br />

Presented To:<br />

BUENA VISTA HIGH SCHOOL ROBOTICS TEAM<br />

WHEREAS, The For Inspiration and Recognition of Science Technology<br />

(FIRST) is a non-profit 501 (c) organization founded in 1989 to<br />

interest and inspire students in math and science; and,<br />

WHEREAS, The FIRST Robotics Competition is a national engineering<br />

contest, which immerses high school students in the exciting world<br />

of engineering. Teaming up with engineers from business and<br />

universities, students get a hands-on, inside look at the<br />

engineering profession. In six weeks, the students and engineers<br />

work together to brainstorm, design, construct and test their<br />

"champion robot"; and,<br />

WHEREAS, In 1997, Delphi <strong>Saginaw</strong> Automotive Systems and students<br />

from Buena Vista High School began their partnership in the FIRST<br />

Program. Their goal to create an attainable learning experience<br />

that would focus present and future needs of the students has paid<br />

off; and,<br />

WHEREAS, Earlier this year, the Buena Vista High School Robotics<br />

Team (Delphi Knights) participated in the FIRST Regional<br />

Competition in Grand Rapids, finishing 1st out of 49 teams and<br />

received the Daimler Chrysler Team Spirit Award; and,<br />

WHEREAS, On April 5-7, <strong>2001</strong>, Buena Vista High School Robotics Team<br />

was in Orlando, Florida for the National Competition of FIRST. Of<br />

the more than 300 teams competing, the Delphi-Dow Knights<br />

Excalibur IV finished in the top 50. In one division, they came<br />

in 13 out of 84. They also received the <strong>2001</strong> Judges Award, for<br />

their unique efforts and performance.<br />

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, That the <strong>Saginaw</strong> <strong>County</strong> Board of<br />

Commissioners does hereby acknowledge and extend congratulations<br />

to the Buena Vista High School Robotics Team for their efforts in<br />

the FIRST Program. We wish them continued success in all of their<br />

future endeavors.<br />
