Board of Commissioners April 24, <strong>2001</strong><br />

Chairman Fish announced the Board would now recess for the<br />

Appropriations Committee meeting. The Board recessed, time being<br />

5:13 p.m. The Board reconvened, time being 5:21 p.m.<br />

By Commissioner Smith, supported by Commissioner Graham that the<br />

Minutes of the Appropriations Meeting be received and made a part<br />

of this day's session with the nays so noted. Carried.<br />

3. Courts and Public Safety Committee<br />

3.1) Community Corrections, re: FY <strong>2001</strong>/<strong>2001</strong> continuation grant<br />

applications<br />

---Mallette moved, supported by Collison to approve 3.1. There<br />

was an exception. Basil asked the Courts Committee to<br />

consider spending some of the money on prevention. Mallette<br />

agreed but went on to explain the purpose of the program<br />

which is to provide meaningful community sentencing as an<br />

alternative to prison and long term jail sentences. Garza<br />

also agreed this should be looked at and went on to explain<br />

how the program addresses recidivism. O'Hare commented on the<br />

need to have counseling available to students in lower<br />

grades. Smith pointed out that some federal monies have been<br />

provided for this purpose. Sheriff Brown referenced current<br />

crime prevention efforts, and community correction funding<br />

which is now being directed to identify individuals in jail<br />

with mental health problems. Motion carried to approve 3.1.<br />
