CEFTA 2006 – EFFECTS, CHALLENGESAND OPPORTUNITIESMSc. Emilija Miteva-KacarskiUniversity "Goce Delcev" - Stip, MacedoniaAbstractFree trade agreements are well known in the theory for the static anddynamic effects that they produce for their member-states. In circumstanceswhen all countries are striving for faster integration in the European Union andthey must use all available potentials, primarily for the accelerated economicgrowth, the process of integration of the existing bilateral free trade agreementsinto a single regional agreement, in this case CEFTA 2006, was a logical step. The CEFTA 2006 is a comprehensive free trade agreement (FTA) betweenSoutheast Europe (SEE) countries. It provides fully liberalized trade inmanufactured goods and largely free trade of agricultural goods, aiming atsupporting trade and investment among member countries. The Agreementaugmented 32 previous bilateral free trade agreements between SEE countries.CEFTA 2006 presents a new ground for improvement of the regionalcooperation. It is a given opportunity that should not be neglected. Memberstatesshould put all their efforts in overcoming various political and otherobstacles and make this agreement work and bring out all the opportunities ithas to offer. Under the threat of the world economic crises that seems to bemuch more serious than we would like to admit, the full enforcement of themultilateral agreement on the Balkans could be crucial for the economicsurvival of its individually small-capacity economies.General characteristics of trade liberalizationunder CEFTA-2006This comprehensive Agreement’s main objectives are, inter alia, toexpand trade in goods and services and foster investment by means offair, stable and predictable rules, eliminate barriers to trade between theParties, provide appropriate protection of intellectual property rights inaccordance with international standards and harmonize provisions onmodern trade policy issues such as competition rules and state aid.359
