20.0 ENVIRONMENTAL STUDIES, PERMITTING,AND SOCIAL OR COMMUNITY IMPACT20.1 SUSTAINABILITY AND ENVIRONMENTAL MATTERSPretivm is committed to operating the Project in a sustainable manner and according totheir guiding principles.20.1.1 GUIDING PRINCIPLES AND CRITERIAPROJECT DEVELOPMENT PHILOSOPHYEvery reasonable effort will be made to minimize long-term environmental impacts andensure that the Project provides lasting benefits to local communities while generatingsubstantial economic and social advantages for shareholders, employees, and thebroader community.Pretivm is committed to sustainable resource development which balancesenvironmental, social, and economic interests. Pretivm will comply with regulatoryrequirements and apply technically proven and economically feasible methodologies toprotect the environment throughout exploration, mining, processing and closureactivities.Environmental management is a corporate priority that is integrated into all aspects ofthe organization which includes risk management, efficiency in development, design, andoperation of facilities and that is implemented on a basis of continual improvement.PRECAUTIONARY PRINCIPLEPretivm will use appropriate and cost-effective actions in all aspects of the Project toprevent serious or irreversible damage. The lack of full scientific certainty regarding theprobability of such effects occurring will not be used as a reason for postponing suchmitigation.TRADITIONAL KNOWLEDGEPretivm respects the traditional knowledge of the Aboriginal peoples who have historicallyoccupied or used the Project area. Pretivm recognizes that it has significant opportunityto learn from people who may have generations of accumulated experience regarding thecharacter of the plants and animals, and the spiritual significance of the area. Pretivm is committed to a process that invites and considers input from people withtraditional knowledge of the Project area towards the design and EA of the Project.Pretivm is striving to establish a cooperative working relationship with all relevant Treatyand First Nations and Metis people to ensure opportunities to gather traditionalknowledge.ECOSYSTEM INTEGRITYThe Project area ecosystem is relatively undisturbed by human activities, although it isnot static. Glacier retreat and relatively recent volcanic activity (within the last10,000 years) along with landslides, debris flows, and snow avalanches, continue tomodify the landscape. Pretivm’s objective is to retain the current ecosystem integrity asmuch as possible during construction, operation, and closure of the Project. Thisobjective will be met by:1. avoiding adverse impacts, where feasible2. mitigating unavoidable adverse impacts3. compensating for adverse impacts that cannot be mitigated.Upon closure and reclamation of the Project, the intent will be to return the disturbedareas to a level of productivity equal to or better than that which existed prior to projectdevelopment, and for the end configuration to be consistent with pre-existing ecosystemsto the extent possible.BIODIVERSITY AND PROTECTED SPECIESPretivm is committed to making every reasonable effort toward maintaining biodiversityin the Project area. Biodiversity is defined by the BC Ministry of Forests, Lands andNatural Resource Operations as, “the diversity of plants, animals, and other livingorganisms in all their forms and levels of organization, and includes the diversity ofgenes, species, and ecosystems, as well as the evolutionary and functional processesthat link them” (BC Ministry of Forests, Lands and Natural Resource Operations 1995).Maintenance of biodiversity is not an isolated effort but an integral part of projectplanning (mitigation and monitoring), environmental effects analyses, and achievementof sustainability goals. This approach will be implemented throughout projectdevelopment and the EA process.20.1.2 CONSULTATIONPretivm recognizes the importance of carrying out consultation and will meet allregulatory requirements.CONSULTATION POLICY REQUIREMENTSBoth the BC Environmental Assessment Act (BCEAA) and the Canadian EnvironmentalAssessment Act (CEAA) 2012 contain provisions for consultation with Nisga’a Nation,First Nations, and the public as a component of the EA process.
