Characteristic scattering angles<br />

At the Brewster angle, all the reflected light is polarized perpendicular to the<br />

incident plane (see Figure 7-32)<br />

Polarization: P = parallel <strong>and</strong> S = perpendicular to the plane of incidence.<br />

Modes of Figure 7-33 shows the scattering angles obtained when two parallel rays of<br />

light<br />

scattering coming from the left hit a spherical particle at angles of incidence (ϕ i ) <strong>and</strong><br />

(ϕ i + ∆ϕ i ). The angles ϕ 0 , ϕ 1 <strong>and</strong> ϕ 2 are measured from the forward<br />

direction <strong>and</strong> correspond to the reflected, the refracted <strong>and</strong> second order<br />

refracted light. (Higher orders of refraction carry only a small amount of the<br />

light intensity <strong>and</strong> will be neglected in this section.)<br />
