Select the appropriate aperture plate for the PDA probe to obtain the desired<br />

size range.<br />

Size range as a function of aperture plate, scattering angle <strong>and</strong> transmitting<br />

optics settings is accessible in the PDA software. Therefore, when deciding<br />

which plate to select, try entering the identifications of the different plates<br />

<strong>and</strong> see which plate gives the range of measurements best suited for the<br />

expected particle size range.<br />

If the largest range is too small, select a larger focal length front lens for the<br />

receiving probe (this does not affect the velocity range) or reduce beam<br />

separation of the transmitting probe if this is possible (this affects the<br />

velocity range). Correspondingly, if the smallest range is too large, select a<br />

shorter focal length front lens (velocity range neutral) or increase beam<br />

separation (this affects the velocity range).<br />

Unscrew <strong>and</strong> remove the front lens from the PDA probe.<br />

Unscrew the mounting ring (by using the special tool which is supplied with<br />

the receiving probe) <strong>and</strong> remove the spring washer.<br />

Remove the aperture plate by pointing the front of the receiving probe<br />

downwards or using a small Allen key. Take care not to touch the lens behind<br />

the aperture plate.<br />

Select the proper aperture plate.<br />

Position <strong>and</strong> mount the new aperture plate so that the small index pin is in<br />

the notch of the plate.<br />

Insert the spring washer <strong>and</strong> install the mounting ring again.<br />

Install the front lens again.<br />

7.5 Connecting the PDA Detector Unit<br />

The cable from the PDA probe ends in a junction box with three or four<br />

cables coming out of it. These are connected to the respective fibre inputs on<br />

the back side of the PDA detector unit, <strong>and</strong> the junction box is fixed to the<br />

back side of the detector unit.<br />

The shutter cable, the calibration fibre cable <strong>and</strong> the photo-multiplier cables<br />

are connected from the PDA detector unit to the <strong>BSA</strong> signal processor.<br />

Caution Be careful not to bend the fibres excessively.<br />

Always cover the fibre connectors <strong>and</strong> the fibre inputs with the protective caps<br />

when the probe is not connected.<br />

Interference filters In the PDA detector unit laser line interference filters in front of the photomultipliers<br />

protect against disturbances from high background illumination<br />

<strong>and</strong> ensure the separation of colour of the scattered light corresponding to<br />

the colour of the beam pairs.<br />

Fibre optic cable Connect the fibre optic cable supplied with the receiving optics between the<br />

(calibration) threaded receptacle on the back panel of the PDA detector unit (Figure 7-58<br />

<strong>and</strong> Figure 7-59: Cal. input) <strong>and</strong> the laser diode output on the back panel of<br />

the <strong>BSA</strong> signal processor.<br />
