4.3 Project explorer<br />

Before beginning a measurement procedure, the user can define a sequence<br />

of data acquisition, analysis <strong>and</strong> display options leading to the required endresult.<br />

The end-result is updated on-line during measurement, providing<br />

immediate feedback on measurement quality.<br />

Analysis sequences for the experiment are visually presented by the project<br />

explorer. The project explorer consists of linked object icons that provide<br />

intuitive traceability as well as an experimental log.<br />

Objects are events, which generate or present data. The objects are visualised<br />

as icons in a hierarchical structure, the project tree, <strong>and</strong> selected from<br />

context-sensitive dialogs. Examples of objects are:<br />

• data sources (signal processors or imported data)<br />

• statistical calculations<br />

• spectrum or correlation calculations<br />

• sorting cyclic data into phase angles<br />

• phase averaging<br />

• data plots<br />

• data lists<br />

• data export<br />

4.3.1 A project tree example<br />

Object are described in detail in chapter 5.<br />

The data is stored in a database <strong>and</strong> can be further analysed, by adding<br />

objects to or deleting objects from an existing data analysis sequence.<br />

When a new object is added to an existing one, it is called a child object. The<br />

existing object is called the parent object. An object <strong>and</strong> its child objects are<br />

called a branch. Branches or complete project trees can be saved as<br />

templates, see section 4.3.5.<br />

The figure below shows an example of an analysis sequence as visualised in<br />

the project explorer.<br />

The project tree in Figure 4-4 includes what would typically be required for<br />

a velocity profile measurement. The output from this during a measurement<br />

would be:<br />

• on-line velocity histograms for the current traverse position<br />
