Beam expanders In some cases it may be desirable to measure small particles while
maintaining a large working distance. This can be solved using a beam
expander. The 55X12 Beam Expander can be mounted on the PDA probe
using the 60X117 Conical Adapter, and used with the 50X series standard
front lenses.
In Figure 7-55, the shaded areas show, for example, that combining a beam
expander with a f = 310 mm front lens gives roughly the same numerical
aperture as a f = 160 mm front lens, thus corresponding to roughly the same
particle diameter range.
and in basic configuration, B. The same applies for the 57X40 FiberPDA.
Additional 1.5× expansion may be achieved with the 41X200 series beam
expanders cascaded with the 55X12 Beam Expander. These expanders have
built-in front lenses with focal lengths ranging from 500 mm (41X205) to
2000 mm (41X220).
Note Do not cascade two 55X12 Beam Expanders since this limits the effective aperture
of the segmented focusing lens and leads to incorrect measurements.
