4.1 Layout<br />

The user interface enables the user to control the set-up of all<br />

instrumentation in the LDA or PDA system, data acquisition as well as data<br />

analysis options, making LDA or PDA experiments straightforward <strong>and</strong><br />

flexible.<br />

The user interface uses st<strong>and</strong>ard Windows conventions. Most of the elements<br />

seen on the display can be moved <strong>and</strong> resized by the mouse. Right-clicking<br />

opens context menus.<br />

Besides the st<strong>and</strong>ard Windows menus <strong>and</strong> toolbars, the user interface<br />

consists of a System Monitor window (always on top), <strong>and</strong> four panes:<br />

• the project explorer, for visualising the whole sequence of data h<strong>and</strong>ling<br />

from source to end-result.<br />

• the property editor, where the parameter values of selected objects are set<br />

up<br />

• the workspace, showing LDA <strong>and</strong> PDA system configuration <strong>and</strong> data<br />

presentation views (lists, plots). The workspace is different for LDA <strong>and</strong><br />

PDA.<br />

• the message window providing system status information.<br />

The System monitor is explained in more detail in section 4.10.3 <strong>and</strong> in<br />

chapter 5.<br />

The different windows in the workspace are selected either by clicking on<br />

them or by clicking on their icon in the project explorer.<br />

The Property editor displays the properties for the currently selected icon in<br />

the Project explorer.<br />
