goal. Well, no kidding. If you already knew all of the unknowns associated
with achieving your goal, you would have already reached it,
wouldn’t you? Some people allow the fact that they don’t know how
to do something to become the fatal blow that kills their dream of accomplishing
something extraordinary.
Success is not about your resources, or knowledge at hand. It’s about
your resourcefulness. If you don’t know how to do something that’s
critical to accomplishing what you’ve set out to do, then go out and
get the knowledge you need. All the knowledge we could ever hope
to need is as close today as our nearest web browser. Every successful
person is a lifelong learner. A successful life is built by on-the-job training
with learning and growing experiences. Decide to seek out and secure
any new knowledge necessary to take you to the heights of where
you want to go.
I’ve found the following technique to be extremely effective in holding
my focus and determination in check. Charles Schwab credited this
strategy as the single-most important action plan he’d ever seen put
into daily practice.
1. Write your goal on a 3x5 index card and carry it with you,
reviewing it several times throughout the day.
2. On the opposite side of the index card list six action items
to be completed today. All should be chosen based on each
completed action’s ability to move you closer to your goal.
They should be listed in order of importance, with number
1 as the most important, down to number 6 being the least
important of that day’s tasks.
3. Go about your day completing the action items in order, but
never moving on to the next before completing the task at
hand in its entirety.
4. At the end of the day, items not completed are moved to
the top of the next day’s list, which you should create anew
each evening.
