Growing up in the rain shadow of the Cascade Mountains, I was
the poorest kid I knew. In fact, if you ask me, Honest Abe had it
easy. All the rich kids in my neighborhood had log cabins. It was
the summer of 1976 and my father, a Vietnam Veteran turned mountain
man, delivered me on a hot, stormy night in the rural town of Duvall,
Washington. My parents raised me without running water or electricity
in what we called The House-truck. It was a makeshift house built
onto the back of an old broken down logging truck. My dad taught me
the value of hard work on our portable sawmill and we raised chickens,
rabbits, goats, and pigs. We didn’t go hungry, but there was no surplus
of material things or friends. I can vividly remember getting onto the
