Growing up in the rain shadow of the Cascade Mountains, I was<br />

the poorest kid I knew. In fact, if you ask me, Honest Abe had it<br />

easy. All the rich kids in my neighborhood had log cabins. It was<br />

the summer of 1976 and my father, a Vietnam Veteran turned mountain<br />

man, delivered me on a hot, stormy night in the rural town of Duvall,<br />

Washington. My parents raised me without running water or electricity<br />

in what we called The House-truck. It was a makeshift house built<br />

onto the back of an old broken down logging truck. My dad taught me<br />

the value of hard work on our portable sawmill and we raised chickens,<br />

rabbits, goats, and pigs. We didn’t go hungry, but there was no surplus<br />

of material things or friends. I can vividly remember getting onto the<br />
