PUSHING TO THE FRONT
My husband, Matt, spends his day pursuing his passions while making
a contribution to our community. Matt renovates historic properties,
the ultimate form of recycling. He exercises his creative muscles to
find new uses for dilapidated properties, and the challenge thrills him.
He also manages to carve out time in his busy schedule to volunteer in
our kids’ classrooms, chaperone field trips, and join them during school
lunches. I am so blessed to have a husband so devoted to his family!
While our kids are in school, I stop at the gym to exercise, and the
fitness instructors’ chiseled physiques are clear indications of the passion
they feel for what they do. The gym is their second home, and it
is where they love to be, improving their own bodies while they help
others achieve physical fitness.
When I pick up our kids at school, I am constantly in awe of their teachers’
passion and devotion. They truly cherish their roles as educators and
role models, and the kids and parents love and appreciate them for it.
We drive from school to the tennis courts, and again we meet passion
face to face. My kids’ tennis coaches would rather be on the courts than
anywhere else, which is a great measuring stick for passion and purpose.
The question of whether you are living your purpose comes down
to this: Is your work selfish, or is it selfless? Are you giving of yourself,
using your talents and gifts to better the world? A true purpose
is selfless in nature. However, the financial rewards can be massive!
There is a lot of truth in the saying, “Do what you love, and the money
will follow.” A 2011 issue of Forbes Magazine named Bill Gates as
America’s richest person and the world’s second richest person. Gates’
technological genius contributes tremendously to society, and he makes
the world a better place through his global philanthropic efforts. Did he
also make a tremendous fortune? Absolutely, beyond his wildest dreams!
Two extraordinarily creative “givers” on the Forbes list are Steven
Spielberg, dynamo film producer, and George Lucas, creator of Star
Wars. They clearly follow their passions, and in so doing, they entertain
the world. And the riches follow.
When I think of enormously successful people, I think of Tony Robbins,
self-help guru who improves the lives of millions through his work.
