When she finished reading the letter, her mouth was agape. After
a short spell of silence she said, “Did you really send that?” …
and without waiting for a response added, “that was a pretty
audacious and somewhat ridiculous letter.” Ridiculous maybe, but as I
prepared to recount to my protégée the events that had led to the letter
and how everything pretty much changed after that, all I could say to
her was, “Well…it worked.”
The events began to unfold after I read an article about a young entrepreneur.
And though I tried to ignore it, the more I read the more uncomfortable
I got, and there were many reasons for that. The subject of
my attention was about the same age as I was, in his mid-twenties and
in the same career I was in, and as I read about him I thought, “Wow!
He is just like me.” However there was one major difference, he was
succeeding in a particular area of business I had not yet discovered
how to be successful in. So while reading up more on him, my thoughts
changed from “Wow! He is just like me!” to “What on earth is he doing
that I am not?” This was not a sarcastic question, I really did want
to know and wished I could somehow ask him, but I did not know him
