PUSHING TO THE FRONT
Most successful people understand goals, focus, planning, and time
management; yet they often make choices that hinder the process, establishing
sayings such as “your actions speak so loud I can’t hear a
word you’re saying,” or “behavior never lies.” In other words, people
often say one thing yet do another, perhaps going back to childhood
when we heard “do what I say, not what I do.”
This actually brings us to the first step in the process of making better
choices. We should establish priorities, I mean life priorities, such
as spiritual, immediate family, extended family, and jobs. Then write
them out and list them in order: most important to least. Once you have
done this, it is important to establish your core values. This includes
such things as integrity, loyalty, and work ethic. In other words, those
values that determine how people see you and, in fact, how you see
yourself and who you want to be. Here it becomes imperative that you
understand you are the master of your fate, the pilot of your vessel. In
other words, you determine the direction and outcome of your life by
choices you make.
Business people, athletes – in fact most all people – understand that
without specific, short-term, intermediate, and long-term goals, as well
as a certain plan or process, you will never reach your potential. Priorities
and core values are just as necessary to make better choices. When
your choices begin to live up to your priorities and core values, your
life will go in that direction.
Have you ever written down your priorities in life, your core values
and thought, “This is who I am, this is how I want to be viewed? This
is what I want to be known for?” It’s a simple task, yet few have ever
done it. It can change your life.
It has also been well established that successful athletes, coaches, and
business men have a good self-image, and high self-esteem. Again,
this leads to a cycle. When you make choices that are in agreement with
your priorities and core values, you like yourself and you continue to
make better choices establishing an upward spiral. Conversely, when
you make poor choices or choices that go against your core values, you
don’t like yourself, causing a downward spiral.
This is why it is so important to write out your priorities and core val-
