dying and I was devastated to be away from school. During the next
few years I stayed with my mom… caring for her, wiping her brow,
protecting her as she had done for me so many times. Because of her
incredible strength & belief even during those unbelievably difficult
times, she was able to turn that 2-month medical deadline into 10 wonderful
years!
4. tHe BUrden oF WaSted potential iS tHe BiggeSt
BUrden oF all.
During this time, we were blessed with our first-born child. I had done
my best being a daughter, and now I was doing my best being a Mom,
which I loved! Yet one night, I realized that there was something missing
inside. It felt like I had let go of a part of me. Somehow deep inside
I knew that if I didn’t become a Doctor to do for others what was done
for me, I would carry the burden of wasted potential on my shoulders
for the rest of my life.
5. WHen tHe dreaM iS Big enoUgH, tHe FactS
don’t Matter.
This realization came to me at 2:00 a.m. I woke my husband with these
words, “Honey, I have to become a doctor.” He rolled over and took me
in his arms while looking deeply into my eyes. In that moment I understood
exactly how much he loved me and how much he was willing to
give up for my happiness. He said, “My love, if that is what you want
to do and what will make you happy, then that is what you will do and
we’ll make it work.”
In that moment none of this made sense. These were the facts: The
nearest medical school was 180 miles away. We had a little baby boy!
It seemed impossible; but sometimes when the dream is big enough the
facts don’t matter.
6. cHallengeS Will Mold yoU and Make
yoUr Stronger.
For the next seven years I commuted back and forth to school weekly.
During that time we were blessed with a little girl. I’m not sure how that
happened when I rarely saw my husband! For seven years I saw my family
only on weekends. I got my heart broken every Sunday as I would
