THE ONly GAmE IN TOWN
Of course, it helps that this restaurant is currently a hot commodity and
everyone is desperate to eat there. But, on the other hand, the online
system causes even more demand – meal tickets are being resold on
sites like eBay for as much as $3000 to desperate diners anxious to get
in at the time of their choosing.
Not only that, but the Next system solves another big restaurant economic
problem – no-shows. When people make a reservation and don’t
come, the restaurant loses that potential money. When it sells a ticket in
advance, however, and nobody comes, it’s the person who bought the
ticket who’s out of luck, not the restaurant.
In all of the above examples, the company’s customer systems actually
help define the business itself to consumers. When they think of Next,
they think of the online reservation system; when they think of Ben
Franklin (the plumbing company, not the founding father), they think
of their “punctual promise.” When a system is effective and high profile
enough, it becomes an integral brand differentiator – in effect, your
USP (Unique Selling Proposition): This is how we sell – and nobody
else does this.
Secret #4:
Sell it WitH a Star
How many of you out there have heard of Michael Boehm?
No clue? Well, that’s the point of this section, because Boehm created
one of the most famous and successful products of the last two decades
– but his name isn’t the one you think of when it comes to this particular
item. And even though the product was an obvious winner, when
Boehm had it ready to go to market, he couldn’t find a corporate backer
to help him put up the money and marketing to make it happen.
That’s when he decided he needed some star power. His invention was
a portable contact grill that cooks food items faster and more healthfully
– and he knew boxer George Foreman ate two burgers before every
fight and that he and his two sons loved to cook meat. He approached
Foreman’s management, and all agreed that the product and the star
were an amazing fit.
